Steering tires ?

My Cub has two missmatched tires on the front , one three rib and one with many small groves like a motorcycle tire.
They are both pretty checkered up and need to go. My question is what tire is best for dirt and snow ?
I tried looking on line for answers but it turned into a frustrating waste of time . No matter how I worded my search all I got was sites selling tires but none saying what tire is for what.

Yes, the standard old tri-rib tires will work best for dirt/snow. The smooth rib like your other tire was meant for mowing lawns, so the tires would not tear into the turf if you turn sharply. They are good tires, but tend to push or slide easily, especially in dirt and snow. The tri-ribs tend to bite a bit more and grab when you turn. They're also fine for mowing lawns, but if the ground is soft they can peel up the sod like a can opener.

I replaced my front tires last fall as the only redeeming qualities of the old ones were that they were black and held air, but that's about it. I bought a pair of Deestone tri-rib 4.00-12's from Miller Tire and I've been very happy with them. http://www.millertire.com/products/lawn ... ont-4-ply/

I don't buy tractor tires until there is nothing left to inflate. Zipping along at 2 or 3 MPH on your tractor and having a flat tire is an inconvenience not a life threatening occurrence.

Just my opinion. Weather checking, cuts and nicks, are not a reason to replace tractor tires.

OK , its the three ribs. As to leaving the old ones on there they are so dry and rotted its not funny. When I got the tractor the elderly woman made a point of showing me where she had tried to get a few more years out of one of them by smearing it with Gorilla Glue to fill in some of the real big cracks. I figure , Im fixing the old girl up so why leave out some nice new tires. The last thingI need is to be in February trying to dig out and have a tire go south.

Agreed Eugene. However, I replaced mine before they failed as I didn't want to have to buy a tube too! Plus I'd rather be changing a tire at my convenience, on a cool spring morning while listening to robins singing, rather than in the middle of the winter while trying to plow snow.

That is usually when I go south. Far enough south that I end up at DSCF.
