Just to add to the dangers of the Cub Sawyer

Postby Hengy » Wed Jul 16, 2014 2:50 pm

I was looking over in the Vine at a post of a Cub Buzz Saw for sale, and this pic was in the ad:

buzzsaw.jpg
buzzsaw.jpg (57.43 KiB) Viewed 885 times

(Image may disappear when the CL ad that it comes from is removed)

Looking at the handles on that saw, perhaps I am looking at the operation incorrectly. It seems to me that you have the long end of the log being cut hanging out to the tractors right and push it through with the handle on the left side of the tractor. Is that correct? If so, it seems like an accident waiting to happen no matter how careful you are with those saws. You have to reach your entire body right across the blade in order to use your right hand to steady the long log and then push the saw table with your left hand. Is this correct? It seems to me that it would be much better to have a handle extending to the left side of the upright post so that you could keep your body off to one side of the saw.

Am I seeing things incorrectly? (wouldn't be the first time)

You push on the log to make the cut. Normally at least two people operate a buzz saw. One to make the cut and one or more to steady the log and advance it. I would agree that this saw is more dangerous than most to be around. Compare to Rudi's saw.

Much better. Even has a real table. All saws will bite however. :D Vern

Jim T and I did the two man operation when we ran mine at Stonethrow.

Wow... watching that video just makes me want to stay away from one of these. Took two men just to hold up the log while advancing it toward the blade. Seems like a danger of binding on the blade if the pushers move the log either too fast or too slowly for the blade. Then the guy who is in charge of operating the handle to tilt the table gets his hand right up next to the blade... YIKES.

It is a cool implement to see mounted, but I would never want to run one! (It does make short work of a pile of wood, though)

Vern is right its a two man operation. The main purpose of the second man is to pick up body parts of the first man and call 911.

If anybody is interested in the saw, it's about 50 miles from my house. I'll help where I can.

Yes, those suckers will bite!!!! Fortunately, for me, my fingers still work and the only permanent damage is a buggered up fingernail. I was very fortunate.

I'd rather rig a log splitter with a PTO driven pump than use that nightmarish machine haha

Much prefer what we had on our Cub. Saw was on extreme right. Driven by flat belt. Table was on rollers attached to the two channel iron rails that the rotating shaft was attached to. Dangerous, yes, but much safer than Brookfield saw.

forgive mi if this is a double post, but I think the original went to the NSA
I never saw a seat mounted like that before, what's up--or do I have to pay more attention?

That's the seat mount for a LoBoy. Without the spring or a cushion, it's not a comfortable way to sit on the tractor.

I could see this at a property that is cutting down a lot of trees. Like 4 people working on cutting trees and 2 people cutting them up! Great for 2 families gathering wood for the winter.

Since this is a good safety topic and it also has a question about the seat, it would be a shame to lose the pic once the Craigslist ad is deleted. Therefore the photo has been permanently embedded the photo into Mike's post so it isn't lost in the future.

one thing wrong is the top guard is missing from the saw and yes it is a 2 man operation I never allow my body or anyone else in front of the saw.

I like my ferguson buzz saw better then the Brookfield saw. I can operate it myself but thing go faster if you have a loader and chucker. Safety must always be on your mind when operating any cordwood saw. Don't cut with a dull blade.
