Yesterday I scored 2 brand new sets of tractor tire chains that have never been on the ground. I pulled one of the chains from the bag that it was in and it looked perfect for a Cub tractor so naturally I jumped had to take them home with me. Today I hung the a chain over a wheel on my Cub and the width was perfect but the length was probably about a foot short from fitting the 24" Cub tires. The bag that one of the sets was in was marked 8" x 19.5". These chains could be easily extended to work on a Cub but if I needed another set of tire chains for a Cub I have a set hanging on the barn.
So my question, what tractor might use 8" x 19.5" tires? The guy selling the chains had a Allis Chalmers B he used for mowing. From what I gathered, he was selling some stuff left by the previous owner of their home. I assumed the B with the belly mower came with the house. Surely the B has larger tires then the Cub. What say you? Oh, did I ever tell you I love garage sales??

Re: Garage Sale Tire Chains
Ricky, that seems like an odd size for a farm tractor tire (19.5") ! As I remember the class A motor homes from the 70's used a rim size of 19.5 " , maybe it was the law to have tire chains available from the Fall to Spring , when you cross the montains , I thing the trucks always had extra sets , drapped on a big rig tractors ! I fact , I saw some on one , just the other day, I think they even rented them going up the Rockies, then returnable when you hit the flat lands , on the other side ! ! Lee Petrie, Joliet, IL.

Re: Garage Sale Tire Chains
I've had several sets of truck tire chains and these are not truck chains, these are tractor chains for sure.

1960's one ton postal trucks, and the Divco milk trucks, used that size tire.
I have a Power King manual here (Doing some repairs for a friend) and tires listed, are 7.50-16, 9.50.16, and 8.00-16 (turf). as well as the 8.3-24.

The "Garden Master", 4 wheel tractor, that I had, and the "Economy" brand ( as I remember), both used the 16" tires on the rear ! Lee Petrie, Joliet,IL.

19.5" is a common rim size on medium-duty trucks, and a popular "custom" size for normal pickup trucks when extra load carrying capacity is desired.

Re: Garage Sale Tire Chains
Matt has it right. 19.5" is a common size for F450, F550, Dodge 4500, etc. Bigger than a one ton, but not up to a 22.5" tire yet. So it's a truck tire chain. One could also possible derive that a set of 22.5" chains might work even better on a Cub. These would come off of a semi truck (and make sure you don't get dual tire chains).
