I just bought a 49 cub that was rolled and the front end was broken off. It broke the right engine ear off . is there a good way to fix it ? or part out the tractor?
It came with two way plows that i will sell. Looks like the po hard faced the plowshares to help keep them from wearing.

Re: broken motor ear
I have seen cracked ones welded. I haven't seen one totally broke off. if the engine runs good I would try welding it. if the engine needs rebuild I wouldn't dump any money into a broken block.

If broken completely off and is not into the oil galley it can be welded. If done properly it will be stronger than new. To weld it properly the engine will have to come out, the timing cover removed and a jig to hole the broken ear inplace. I use a radiator housing off a cub power unit.

Clark,
The engine runs really well. The po said it was rebuilt about a year ago. The ear is broken at the two bolt holes that bolts to the rad housing, not at the oil galley, I have the piece. Do you know anyone local that can weld it? I am in Minerva, not too far from you.

Re: broken motor ear
John, I dont know anyone that welds engine blocks around here. I have been doing the welding myself for many years. I have welded some that were broken off on both sides with good results. if you have a engine machine shop near Minerva they may be able to weld it. If not the they may be able to send you in the right direction. Since the engine has been rebuilt It is worth welding.

Re: broken motor ear
I have had good success welding both engine ears, and even final drives on with mg200 there are better rods out there though. Pre and post heat are key, but it can be done
