What keeps the brake band centered?
I'm assembling my finals and It looks to me like the brake bands can move side to side a little on the the pin that holds them. Are there spacers that are suppose to be there to keep them centered on the drum? If so mine didn't have any and did have one band wear a little off the drum.

Re: What keeps the brake band centered?
Great.. well, there were no spacers when I disassembled them, explains the uneven wear. I'm guessing I could fab a couple. Any suggestions?
Thank you
Thank you

They are still available new, but the pins for the straight pull and the toggle assembly are different.

It's a 47.. I'm leaning toward a fab out of small diameter tubing or pipe. I'm frustrated this is the only thing holding me up from mounting the finals on the torque tube Thanks for the info

Hi,
Here is the page from the Cub parts book showing the pin, it is number 6. The pic shows the older and newer brakes. Click on the pic makes it bigger.

Re: What keeps the brake band centered?
The pins that came out don't have that thick end, they are a straight smooth pin and no spacer. I tried looking for a new (or used) one but no luck.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: What keeps the brake band centered?
JP Tractor is one of the sponsors at the bottom of the page. Those pins are hardened, anything less will bend. I learned that the hard way. The thick end you are seeing in the parts diagram isw actually the spacer that is made as part of the pin. the pin extends through it.

Re: What keeps the brake band centered?
Hi,
I looked in an older parts book on here, and it looks like the spacer was separate from the pin on Cubs with serial number 18558 and below, I think, I don't have pins to look at, so not totally sure. It tells the serial numbers to the right of the part numbers. So if the spacers were separate on the first Cubs, someone could have left them off of the pins. Click on the pic makes it bigger.

Re: What keeps the brake band centered?
That would be early 1948, probably sometime in March or so.Glen wrote:Hi,

Re: What keeps the brake band centered?
I do believe mine is a 47. I didn't think about the serial number, very interesting. I will be checking that tomorrow for sure, if anything just to see where I fall in lineage haha..
The pins look original. One had a very slight bend in it but no spacers on either side. I went to Ace Hardware and picked up a couple steel spacers and modified them to fit on either side of the band with the drum centered and secured where it should be. I think they will work fine. Many thanks for the help.
