Internal and external corrosion, replace the regulator.

I have been doing some internet searching for regulators.
Here some some that I have found.

Check the continuity on the braided wire ground on the side of regulator. It will be on (tractor) front side below regulator cover. Don't ask, BTDT.

There is what I think and what I know. What I think is there are only two manufacturers of this type of regulator that currently sell to the US market. One manufacturer is in the US and the other is in India. What I know is I have not had good luck with the 6 volt ones made in India. The regulator pictured on Amazon, Tractor Supply, and Steiner are made in India (and are priced accordingly). The Indian made regulators have a flat topped case and the tabs stick out straight. Antique Tractors R Us shows pictures of India made ones and USA made ones. Notice Antique Tractors R Us lists two prices for a number of their regulators (standard and premium). The India made regulators sell for $25-$35. The USA made ones sell for $60 or more. For my money, I would buy the USA made one. Rockauto sells the Standard Products VR-216 (made in USA) for $62.79. My local NAPA wants $92.99 for the very same part, just a different part number. If you go to the Standard Products eCatalog webpage and look up VR-216, the picture of the bottom of the unit shows the NAPA part number (go figure).

Just MHO, if you already have a 12v system, I would buy an alternator and volt meter to install and sell the generator to get some of the expense back.

Conversion to a single wire Delco alternator will be just about the same price as the NAPA regulator, perhaps a bit less. You will need the Delco single wire alternator, lower mounting bracket and tensioning arm.

My local AC Delco Service Centre has them and they are US/Canadian made which works for me. Very high quality and pretty good price. It is an RCP 13227 REGULATOR, PRESTO 6V and you can see that in the Generator and Cut-Out thread which might be of use.
