You could try changing the gear size on the drive to get a closer pattern.

You know Dad mentioned that very fact and I advised - "Dad this is what we used when I was a kid" - not thinking perhaps it was wrong then. Where does one find a smaller gear?

Are you getting uniform coverage but not close enough? Or sporadic coverage?

When we tested it on the road before going to the field the drops were not uniform. You'd have 3 then a space then 1,2,3 nicely spaced then a gap and 3-4 more. In total we dropped 25-27 seeds in 24 feet - but very unevenly spaced.

Re: Planting Plate Number for Corn
Yep, kernel/plate hole size seems to be the problem. That is assuming planter is operating fine. Used to be when you bought seed, they could tell you what plate to use or sell you plate you needed. Basically trial and error nowadays( for me anyway). Do you have another plate you can try? If not, holler at Boss. He can probably fix you up

We have some NOS Plates and even a mouse chewed old book from a NOS Planter. We did the farmer comparison and decided to use the one we've always used. Need more testing and a bit more digging in the "Magic Barn" for more NOS.
On the plate size our 100+ year old McCormick-Deering Planter had those seed settings and I recall from the 1960's when Dad would check the bag......Day's now gone by......Sadly!

Re: Planting Plate Number for Corn
there are many differen plates for corn. In the back of the impliment parts book that has the planter in it there should be a chart with plate numbers for all different seeds. One thing to do is with just a hand full of seeds in the planter run it with the lid off watching the flow and fit of seeds in the plate.Keep in mind that when the seeds get low in the planter hopper the flow of seeds may not make it to the plate. especially on smooth ground such as a road. in my CBI-1 1950 cub farm impliment parts book the chart for seed plates starts on page 235. in my CB-1A 1950 impliment parts book the plates start on page 290

Re: Planting Plate Number for Corn
The belly planters do not space the seeds as well as planter with a straight drop there is a lot of bends in the seed tube on a belly planter, that makes for a not so equal spacing. you will need a small or extra small plate for sweet corn

Re: Planting Plate Number for Corn
Sweet corn always came in a small brown paper bag, so no chart for plates.
On the old 56 planter, we always just found whatever plate fit the seed best, and used it. The "new" JD7000 doesn't use plates, it just plants.
I remember having to jog along behind the 56 planter doing sweet corn, reaching in each seed box and sweeping the seed on to the plate to keep it feeding. Those old planters didn't like planting 1/2lb of seed. It would just pile up in a wad.
