TOB grease

Postby offrink » Mon Jun 23, 2014 10:42 am

So I had some help from a friend who is a tractor restorer who helped me out with my cub. After he got the cub back to me he woke up in the middle if the night and he couldn't remember if he greased the TOB. So I need to heavily grease the TOB. I know to use the cheapest grease possible. My question is after I grease it can I let it run to heat it up and penetrate and repeat 3-4 times or will I need to use the clutch to heat it up to melt the grease for it to penetrate?

There is a little hole on the opposite side when the grease comes out that is all you need to do. Look in the manual section for schedule maintance... Don't forget to grease the distributor and oil fan hub.

Grease the TOB until grease comes out the top. With your finger or some sort of tool smear a thin layer grease on the face of "carbon" puck part of the throw out bearing you can reach.

Do not operate the tractor. Let the tractor set for a couple of days. Cheap grease will be absorbed and penetrate the "carbon" puck portion of the TOB.

If grease comes out the top of the TOB on first pump, it was previously greased. Some new TOBs are previously greased, some not.

So smear some grease around the front of the TOB as well as heavily grease and let it sit. Running the cub would be an issue to help warm up the grease?

Correct on the first sentence.

Not sure about running the Cub to warm up the torque tube and throw out bearing. That would take some time, hours, for the engine heat to transfer to the torque tube. It's been in the upper 90s in central Missouri, I don't think running the tractor would help much.

Here it is low 70's and rain. Maybe a heater or light bulb would help.
