My 1949 Cub has a magneto and I have replaced points ,condenser, rotor and distributor cap. While looking at the parts diagram I see that part nos. 40 and 41 are Distributor Body Felt and Retainer but the diagram does not show the location of these parts. I have not seen these parts in my magneto. Unless they are in the impulse coupling unit they appear to be missing. If they are missing where can I get these items? I looked on the Steiner and TM web sites and did not see these items.

Re: Magneto Question
Don't think they go in a magneto. I have rebuilt many J4's and don't remember those parts. Might be a distributor item, but not sure why it's listed on the magneto parts listing.

Re: Magneto Question
Rick,
Thanks. I was worried that my mag was missing some parts. Since I don't have much experience all I had to go by was the parts book.

Re: Magneto Question
I have just taken apart my j4 magneto and when removing the nut #36 from the rear impulse end of the unit it was very difficult like someone had mashed up the end of the threads. I found that my magneto is missing the two washers #34 and #35. Can these be replaced with any regular washer and lock washer, or, are they special to the j4 unit?

Re: Magneto Question
I do not know about the felt and retainer, but item 35 is a standard lock washer, only thinner. 34, however is a specialty item, it has a tab that extends into a notch on the shaft to give the lock washer the proper place to grip. That allows it to be locked to the weight shaft, not the impulse cover.

Re: Magneto Question
The only felt washers I ever remember seing in mine were on the bottom stud that goes through the body.(The one that the condensor wire, points spring, and magneto attach to.)They acted as insulators between the wiring and housing. I replaced mine with rubber.

Re: Magneto Question
If it does go anywhere it would go on the shaft 24A just before the rotor goes on. The distributor models have them there

Re: Magneto Question
Well no John. I don't have a mag anymore since it bit the dust along time ago and since dad needed the tractor he bought the distributor conversion. What I meant was on a distributor system there is a felt washer that goes on the shaft immediately before the rotor goes on and just thought the mag might be the same
