Princess '55 Planting Potatoes 2014

Postby PVF1799 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 7:13 am

Our 1955 Farmall Cub and my 1919 Dad - worked together to get 850 row feet of potatoes in the soil. I tried some interesting mounting locations for the camera. Watch for the clevis that appears to fall from the sky :D Near the end of the video you can see how nice the rows came out.

Watched most of the video. Skipped the center section.

Question. What to heck are you going to do with all of the potatoes? Are the harvested potatoes sold?
I have an excuse. CRS.

I grew up and came back to Aroostook Co. in northern Maine, potato central. Living smack dab in the middle of spud country, that's about the last thing I want to plant but it was neat seeing what the Cub is capable of. And for the backbreaking work your 1919 dad put in...my hat is off to him.

And those rows are straight enough to make me wonder if you didn't use tractor mounted GPS. Very nice.

Great video Ken! We did about 800' here in 100' increments. I use a furrower blade(middle buster) to dig the trench instead barring off with the disks.

My question is about how deep are your seeds when you cover them with the disks?

I always read about 2" of coverage is good to start but it looks like yours might be a bit deeper. Then add soil i.e hill as needed. I hand cover with a hoe so they are about 2" deep when finished. Our soil is clayey loam so I always worry about the seeds rotting or suffocating if we get a boat load of rain and they are planted deeper. We did get 3" of rain this past Wednesday and they are pretty droopy!! Hopefully they recover.

Chuuck, the coverage is about 3" on average. A little deeper than Dad wanted - in his words only so he can hill better later. We'll see what happens this year. Last year they were too much on the surface - not properly hilled because of the weather and we ended up with a bunch of green ones. I didn't want to take any chances. :D

Happy Growing!

Ken. Like your hiller video so much that I wrote back on it to the wrong thread--your corn planting one. So...here's what I wrote:

Greatly appreciated video. I especially liked seeing how the offset shank hillers worked under the Cub engine. Nice camera work.

Since I'm new to hillers, that video was great to see -- thanks.

I kinda figured you hit reply to the wrong post. No worries - your comments make the hours of editing worth the effort. Happy Hilling!

Ken, I too always enjoy seeing your videos. But isn't it about time for an update on the barn rebuild, and is there a quad copter in your future? :D

Nice video. Looks like a lot of work. We use a Iron Age 1919 planter. One guy on the tractor and a 2nd riding the planter watching the seed potatoes drop into the row. Keep a lookout for one. They're a back saver especially with the size of that field.
