J4 Mag Rotor

Postby Stanton » Wed Jun 18, 2014 11:27 am

Repairing a magneto and discovered a damaged rotor and sprocket; several teeth sheared off. Neither are cheap to replace.

What activity would cause the teeth on the rotor and/or the sprocket to shear off?

Thanks.

Usually comes from either wear, once the first one wear down it tears up the following ones, or a bad or misaligned cap and the rotor catches on a post as it comes by, or the pinion (drive) gear has become worn to the point the teeth are sharp and pointed wearing the rotor teeth. When reinstalling be sure to use some high temperature grease to lubricate them.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

To add to John's list, and he hinted at it, lack of lubrication will cause lots of friction, and lead to broken teeth.

I'm leaning toward lack of lube / too much friction. Bought a tube of high temp silicone dielectric grease at NAPA last night.

Have the parts on order, so should be in sometime by next week. Looking forward to getting this Cub back up and running again.
