best alt for 12 volt conversion

Postby jfgarner » Mon Jun 16, 2014 7:02 pm

What is the best choice for an alt for a 12 volt conversion? I think I saw something about a Datsun B210 alt fitting but can not find the post.

12 volt single wire Delta clone.

Inexpensive, brackets are available, easy wiring hook up. Will fit under the hood. Available at any auto parts store.

Welcome

Edit: Delco and not Delta.

The popular alternator is a Hitachi 14231.

It is smaller than the Delco 10SI, and will fit under the hood with the factory generator bracket. You need to modify the bracket to make the Delco fit.

The Delco was the alternator that IH put on the late model cubs from the factory. I dont know why people think it is hard to make the delco fit. I did a post some time ago on using the generator bracket that is already there. There are 10 delcos put on a cub to every hitachi used. I usually just pm my answer to those that ask.But the alternator that best suits the cub is the one wire Delco from NAPA $50 with a core and it comes with a lifetime warranty, the cheaper line is less money but only a year warranty I think. Hard to beat in my opinion. I have installed hundreds of them on many different types of tractor.

By the way get the good NAPA one it charges at an idle, most of the clones have to be revved up to start charging

Boss, make a believer out of me. I just can't see where there's clearance enough for the 10SI. I've test fit one before and it either sticks too far out to the right or hits the water outlet neck before it folds over enough to the left to clear the hood.

EDIT: I've searched your posts, and the only one I can find that shows pictures, shows a custom bracket.

Can the 10SI be mounted using the stock generator bracket? If so, how?

The 10SI or Delco single wire alternator will fit under the hood. You need to either purchase or make the bottom bracket.

I made the bottom bracket. Some place on this site is the plans. Top bracket I purchased from Clint.

My local NAPA store wants $56.88 for a Reman 13-4011 SW plus core ($17.50) which is $74.38 + tax.
For a new Delco 4011 they want $104.72 + tax. (no core fee)

Both charge at idle and have a lifetime warranty.

I will try and find the post I made using the original bracket, it is on here somewhere

Hmm, I'll keep that one in my back pocket just in case the generator on my '53 gives up the ghost.
