Grinding when I put her in gear.

Postby Posco » Sun Jun 01, 2014 5:01 pm

This seems to be a relatively new thing that has cropped up, and even more so since I greased the clutch fitting. When I attempt to put the tractor in gear it wants to grind. Is there any adjustment I can make or am I looking at replacing some more parts?

Are you waiting about 5 seconds to put in gear after pressing the clutch and then shifting? Mine would gring until some one on the site gave this hint and it works. May not be your problem but give it a try, always start with simple thing s first
Ain't no shame in being early

Thanks for the tip. Nope, I wasn't doing that and hopefully it's that simple.

I have a belly mower on mine and if the blades are still spinning, I cannot change gears. The PTO keeps things moving too, the inertia of the blades...
But I think that a new, properly adjusted clutch WOULD make things better. A Cub tranny (I've been told) is non-synchronized. So you really should start out in the gear you are going to use.

make sure the clutch is adjusted properly so that it is releasing the clutch all the way to change gears

I do, I don't shift on the fly. One thing I noticed is once I have it in any gear and do not release the clutch it will shift into any other gear without grinding. If I put it in neutral and release and depress the clutch again to try to put it in any gear it grinds.

Any 'how-to's' and special tools required to do that? I've never adjusted a clutch before.

clutch pedal should have about 1" of freeplay only in it, if not needs to be adjusted

sounds like the pilot bearing is tight holding the mainshaft a little liquid wrench will free that up if that is what it is.

I have the free play in the clutch pedal. I'll give this a shot.

you will need to have the cub on a steep hill with the front end down hill , block the wheels , you can spray the main shaft in front of the throw out bearing, use the straw that comes with the can, use plenty of L.W. It will run down the shaft to the pilot bearing. I have fixed many this way.
