1972 Cub Misses After Warms Up

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Wed May 28, 2014 2:40 pm

Went out the other day and was cultivating with a '72 Cub. It started up and ran excellent until using for a bit and after a while when it warmed up it started spitting and cutting out as if it was vapor locked, running out of gas, or something of that nature. Noticed a little bit of oil leaking out of the dipstick/breather too. But not alot. This tractor runs good and strong with no blowby or smoke.

What could be the problem, or what should I check with these symptoms other than the obvious trash in the tank/sediment bowl.

After thinking back.....the neighbor used it last year and he said it quit on him a couple of times driving back from his Church's garden to our place.......which is about a 2 mile trip with a big hill coming back. Maybe these issues are related?

My first guess would be the coil. Eddie has acted like that when the coil was going bad.

First check would be coil going bad, second cracked or shorting plug wire, third condenser could be bad. I have been there and done all three. The last issue was solved with new plug wires.

Don't forget to clean the main jet and check for good fuel flow.

The first thing I'd check is the fuel cap, to be sure the vent holes are open.

I'd drive it till it acts up. Then pull the plug on the fuel bowel but shut the gas off quickly first. If you have gas then go after the ignition. A broken wire in the coil wrap will open up as it gets hot. Don't rule out a shorted condenser too.
With my loboy I found a pebble in the gas valve that wouldn't let the gas by it sometimes.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Ok. I see everyone is leaning towards the ignition side. Yeah, so it for sure was doing it last year and it was used about 2 or 3 times in the garden. Did it after it was running for around 45 minutes. Wouldn't do it after it was running for about 20-30 min. Then this year the same thing except this time it would ACT like it was going to die instead of quitting all together.

The carburetor is clean and good to go.

Would a Bad Coil cause it to run rough or "Cut Out" though? I just thought they would quit all together when the coil got hot, until you let them cool off and then they'll run again.

Absolutely. When Eddie had a failing coil, she acted exactly as you describe. She would gradually lose power after mowing for 45 min to an hour. I'd shift from 2nd to 1st and get a few more rounds out of her, but she'd get to the point that she couldn't even drive the mower in first. The symptoms sure mimicked fuel starvation, but it turned out to be the coil.

wat it could be is the fuel line is running too close to heat in the fuel is not working correctly. follow your fuel line and look for and place it might get hot.
