Non cub weights
What are some of the other weights people have found that fits their tractor's wheels or weights located elsewhere on the tractor.

Re: Non cub weights
Farmall A weights will fit the rears of the Cub, though they are a little lighter than a Cub weight. Merlin sports A weights now. I cannot recall if I had to use different bolts to allow enough slop for the bolts to hit the target of the holes in the wheel dishes or not.

Down in the above post is a description of an additional front weight I made for my Cub.
Some garden tractor rear wheel weights fit the Cub's front rims. Also, some antique 2 wheeled garden tractor weights fit the Cub's front rims.
Measure up the bolt holes for your needed weights. Weights come up frequently at farm auctions.

Re: Non cub weights
Is there any specific brand mower/tractor weights fit that are non farmall? I like the idea of weights from the bolster.

Re: Non cub weights
Guessing, any or most of the weights for a 12" garden tractor rim will fit the Cub's front rims.offrink wrote:Is there any specific brand mower/tractor weights fit that are non farmall?
At auction I won the bid, $10 or $15, on a Wards Plow Trac, a 2 wheeled garden tractor. The reason I wanted the garden tractor was because it had wheel weights that would fit the Cub.

Re: Non cub weights
Weights hanging from the bolster are probably not a good idea on the Cub. The bolster/engine interface is the weak point on Cubs, and any extra weight hanging from it doesn't help things.
Weight on the wheels doesn't place any undue stress on the bolster.

This is what I did to add extra weight:

Really. Need to think this one through. 30 or 40 pounds hanging, and bolted into the tool bar socket is considerably less than a cultivator, street sweeper, blade, or other implement.ricky racer wrote:Matt Kirsch wrote:Weights hanging from the bolster are probably not a good idea on the Cub. Where did the extra front weight bolt to for the modified lowboy highway mowers?

Looks like they bolted to the front axle.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Yes. As I recall, using axle clamps from a 340U.

Re: Non cub weights
I'm talking about weights hanging from the bolster itself, out in front of the tractor.
If you have a hundred pounds hanging way out in front like that, and you start bouncing around, you're yanking on those engine ears pretty hard.
The highway mower weights hang from the AXLE. Again, little to no stress is placed on the bolster.
Cultivators and grader blades put the stresses right at the joint between the bolster and engine. Weights like this have quite a bit of leverage.

Re: Non cub weights
Weight on the front of a cub probably is wasted since the Cubs aren't really prone to wheelies. Weights like those on the Highway Cubs was to help make them more stable on slopes. Most owners that add weight to a Cub do it to aid in traction and that weight is needed towards the rear of the Cub. The best weight is wheel weights or liquid ballast. Myself, I eat a lot of cheese burgers to aid in traction.

Re: Non cub weights
Due to the steepness of the "hills" in the Ozarks I add weight to the front center of my tractors. Without the weights the front wheels bounce when hitting a bump going up an incline.ricky racer wrote:Weight on the front of a cub probably is wasted since the Cubs aren't really prone to wheelies.
OH. Attending a Cubfest in Ohio I was provided directions to a location which included a hill to a location. That "hill" wouldn't have been considered as such in the Ozarks. Also grew up in Iowa hill country where we farmed on the contour, around the small hills.
I have an excuse. CRS.
