I was a tech also.... but I go for convenience. I have a couple of analog meters kicking around (none GOOD quality) but I assume you only want to buy one.... and I find the little fold up one from Radio Shack to be ideal in nearly every situation. It is tiny and fairly tough (ain't broke it yet) and has a beep continuity tester (think find the other end of this wire in the bunch of all BLUE wires). Easily fits in your pocket and toolbox. On sale for $20 right now...

I agree with John, and have a few different kinds depending on what I'm doing. A test light is the quickest & dirtiest checker. But it usually only tells you one of two things, voltage is present, or continuity.
My main most checker is a Klein CL2000. I use it the most simply because it can check anything, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's overly loaded with features. It does the basic voltage, amperage, continuity, and resistance checks for AC & DC. It really shines by letting me clamp a wire and measure amperage through the wire.
