Woods 42C Blades

I have an older mower(serial number 868) and it has the two holes in the blades and are held on(in place) by 3 bolts on each blade. I ordered new blades from my local Woods dealer and they came with a twist. The blades I took off are flat. The parts guy says that the Woods folks are saying that that is the only blade they have for the old style mowers. It does not cut well at all. The cutting edge is higher than back of the blade by about 3/4 of an inch.

Any suggestions? Anyone else had this problem?

Tezell, I don't have that particular style of woods mower, but, I'd suggest you try an Agri-Supply Store. They advertise that they have hundreds of mower blades. Hope this information helps! Have a safe day. Looks like some of you are in for some bad weather today, Tom.

Thanks. I will try that. I am always looking for an excuse to visit the Ag Supply store!

Lot of rain and more coming. No severe weather yet.

Probably a stupid question, but do you have them right side up? Not real obvious...I always need to check for the "THIS SIDE TOWARD GROUND" on the blade!!!

No they are right side up. I have taken them off and tried every way possible. They will only go on one way with the cutting edge facing foward. The Woods dealer called Woods and they told him that the bevel on the sharpened side should be facing the ground. That is not possible with these blades. If the blades were not twisted it would work fine.

I don't know what's going on but to say that is not right. The blades seem to set up all wrong. Usually the blades are higher in the back than the cutting edge to create a vacuum to lift the grass while it's being cut.

I think Mike nailed it, the new blades seem to be for the opposite rotation of your deck.

A picture is worth a thousand words. :D
I doubt I have an answer, but I'm not even understanding the question. :?
Didn't know there was a different style of Woods 42C blade than the single big hole so at least I learnt sumpthen.

I will say mine had to be mounted bevel side down. I was told that was so they wouldn't pick up trash (sticks, rocks, etc.) and throw them out of the mower, instead they throw it down into the ground. Don't know if that was true or not, but they cut fine that way. They also have the twist, and if mounted bevel side up, would have had the cutting edge on the trailing side of the blade. So it was fairly obvious that they had to mount either bevel side down, or rotate the opposite direction. Not sure why yours would look any different??? I'm with Scrivet, would need to see a picture for further understanding.

They sent me blades for a mower that turns counter clockwise, not clockwise like the cub turns.

I spoke with boss about it yesterday and sent him these pictures.

He suggested heating them and straightening, I did, reinstalled....works like a charm.

Thanks Boss. :D

PS--used my torch again yesterday....I do not know how I got along without it. Thanks again BR and Mr. Roy. :D

New blades CCW, (from top view) old blade appears to be CW rotation. We had guys in the athletic dept. that put freshly sharpened blade on upside down then wondered why it would not cut!

Glad you got it figured out. I read the word "twist" in one of the posts, and was a bit confused to your predicament. I would say your blades had an "offset", which clearly means they cannot mount with the other side down. Thanks for the picture!

Glad you got it worked out. More than one way to skin a cat! :coffee: It's just too bad you have to resort to that to get 'er fixed. ...and torches are a wonderful tool to have available.
