Magneto/Governor Oil Seal

Postby Chris in PA » Sun Apr 20, 2014 4:47 pm

Happy Easter everyone.

My '49 Cub died yesterday afternoon from a faulty oil seal between the governor and mag, thus filling the mag with a pint or two of oil. How it even started with that much oil in there is beyond me, but cleaning everything up enabled me to at least get the tractor put away.

After checking out prior topics on the seal between the mag and governor, it appears that the National 450313 is the seal of choice. When cross referencing the Case/IH number with CR, I am directed to a CR 20749

Cross referencing the National 50313 gives two different choices: the 20749 above, and 16754

Dimensionally, the two are different. I have a 49479 Napa/Victor seal that cross references to the 20749, but the measured thickness is 0.5in vs listed 0.438in for the 20749 and 0.25in for the 16754.

I have one of Mr. Fauble's seal installation tools, but which of these seals is the correct one to use? :lost: I don't remember which one went in during the rebuild 14 years ago. I'm wondering if I damaged the present seal somehow when I replaced the mag last Spring.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Thanks!

Chris

As long as the inner and outer diameters are the same, thickness is not critical in this particular application. Just so long as it is not thicker than the original
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
