Grandpas Cub losing power
I have had the cub running fine, starting easily and finally worked on getting the woods 42" belly mower installed. I know the mower puts a load on the tractor but when mowing up a slight incline I noticed blowby coming from the oil filler and a noticable loss of power since installing the mower. I put new rings in the motor and honed out the cylinders to break the glaze. This was done this past winter. I did not do anything to the valves except clean up the seats. Could the extra load of the mower exposed a weakness somewhere to cause the blowby? I did not notice it before. Could blowby be getting past the valves? I am planning on pulling the tank and do a compression test to see where i am at. I noticed a slight bit of "cream" on the filler intake surface but nothing in the oil. Could that be condensation getting into the oil naturally?

Conduct the compression tests, dry then wet. This will help indicate the problem area(s).
Condensation, pretty common due to temperature changes and humidity levels. Normally nothing to worry about. If you haven't done so, check the valve tappet clearance and ignition timing.

This is my first experience with a cub engine. With the engine running should there be amy noticable pressure coming out of the ol filler/crankcase breather? I held a piece of paper over the filler with the engine running and it was pushing the paper away pretty good.

Edit: Stated you replaced the rings. Did you measure the bore before ordering rings? Did you stagger the ring end gaps? Get the rings installed in the correct order and right side up?

check the crankcase breather tube from the end of the valve gallery to the air cleaner for blockage.

I checked the timing and it was off. Dist clamp not tight enough. Now that the timing is set, I took the cub out and started out in 3rd gear and it now has a lot more power to get it rolling. New problem now. The touch control is now not responding. It will not go up with the control arm or go down. The mower deck has pressure on the rock shaft but it will not move. There was some oil weaping around the hydraulic unit but I don't think that there is enough lost that would keep the unit from working. I'll have to check the fluid level on Friday. What type of fluid can be used in the hydraulics?

Check the dipstick level. If it is high, you have hydraulic fluid leaking into the oil pan. That means the hydraulic pump shaft seal/o-ring needs to be replaced. HyTran by Case/IH is probably the best hydraulic oil for a Cub.

Just curious. Did correcting the timing relieve the blow-by issue? How many hours since the rebuild?

Not sure if it corrected it but I had very little hours on the cub before heavy loading. less than 3 hrs. Just running it now to help the rings seat in.
I am more concerned now about the touch control. I was able to get it to move with the lever but as soon as there was any pressure it stopped. It is not building up any presssure. It, the manual, says to move the up/down lever 10-12 times to help bleed the air. Will the rockshaft move when doing that. I put the lever to the full lift position and manually lifted the deck and the shaft went to full travel. Now it is stuck there and wont come down. Any thoughts?
