Grinding Noise

Postby Scout » Sat Apr 12, 2014 2:49 pm

Hi Gents,

A beautiful day in the North East today, took the 48' Farmall Cub out for a spin.

In all gears - all three forward and reverse - I hear a grinding noise. The noise is heard only on the left side of the tractor and is tough to localize (transmission, left wheel housing?). The noise is audible only when the tractor is in motion.

Would appreciate any/all input to rule in or rule out an issue (or is this "normal" for a 66 year old tractor?).

Thank you!

Does it sound like a bearing.
Also check oil level in the transmission and both rear finals,
edit spelling

check all the lug nuts and wheel bolts to make sure they are not loose, possible bad bearing in final drive as Mike mentioned

I was going to suggest the same thing as Tim (the loose bolts). Don't ask me how I know....

also, don't forget to check the wheel lugs and bolts on the rear.

How are your brakes. I have had the breake drum/hub come loose on my 48 before. chewed up both the the shaft and the brake. Had to replace them both.

Appreciate the input!

Checked wheel lugs, bolts and brakes - all appear tight/intact. Suspect wheel bearings now (thanks Tim/tst).

Is there a link to a maintenance manual or a thread/post which I can read and reference, to guide me on rear wheel bearing inspection, removal and replacement?

Best,

Scout

Scout, Here is a link to a "how to" by Bill E. Bob that shows the rear final rebuild: viewtopic.php?f=142&t=47423
This link is the GSS-1411 Blue Ribbon Service manual that's in the tool bar above: http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/index.p ... es/Service Manuals/Blue Ribbon Service Manuals&order=0
Click on the Service Manuals, then the GSS-1411 and go to the section on the rear finals/differential. Also, just because the bolts look tight, I'd suggest putting a socket on them and making sure they are tight.
