Hey Scotty...Like your trailer!!! Brakes & a good brake controller will make any dual axel trailer safer  ! If you're thinking about any modifications...you may want to consider rounding off the top front of the trailer to make it less wind-resistant :D . I kinda like the idea of a partially covered trailer (safer for your tractor in rain & hail storms on the way to shows) :D . The front box area gives you storage room and (as some suggested) possible primative sleeping room too  !

Good luck with it...and IH Red would always be MY color choice  !

Get your self a few spare parts such as wedge blocks for holding the rim
on the hub & some nuts for the same also a replacement hub.

I say this as these parts are not easy to find on the road if you break down as they are special use items.

One last note check the bearings some of them are not made any more
and there is no replacement you can even get.
Found all this out the hard way.

Not trying to be pushy just relating from past troubles.
If it's been broken I did it.
If its not broken wait till I touch it.

One further note Scotty, many places that build and sell utility trialers can supply you with a complete axle with brakes for about 100 to 150 dollars. If you have much repairs needed on the ones you have it's cheaper to replace it than repair, especially if it concerns brakes.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I think in NC it is illegal to use m/h wheels & tires on highway except on mobile homes. also if more than one axle, one must have brakes. I agree with the other guys, get those brakes working!! Haven't heard any one comment about surge brakes. If when my tandem gets brakes, thats what it will have as it was built with VW spindles. stopping trailer with combined weight of 2,800 with a tow vehicle weighing about 1,800 was interesting.

You guys aren't going to haul that trailer behind the Dakota, are you? I have just the ticket for you...

This is about 20 minutes from where I live, it was on Ebay last fall. If I had money to burn, lots of spare time, and ownership in a refinery, I'd buy it and haul my Loboy to Cubfest next year.

I'd love to have that 1300, but my pocket book won't stand for it. Think I'll stick with my Ranger for the time being. It did just fine pulling 2 cubs, 2 bellly mowers, and a disk plow to Ohio for cubfest (525 miles each way).

My Ranger has the V6, 4.0 liter overhead cam. That model motor had been used in Explorers for a few years, but mine was the first year it was available in a Ranger. Really been happy with it so far. With autoamtic transmission, the Ranger is rated for 5k trailer. My trailer does have 4 wheel brakes, and the truck has a Tekonsah Prodigy contoller.

I have two 16' tandem trailers, one with brakes on one axle and a heavier one with brakes on all four wheels. The one with brakes on both axles has two different brakes... Dexter and Fayette. I see that as a good thing since they don't come on at the same rate. I've always been leery of the possibility of all four trailer wheels locking up in a panic stop and thus losing its' steering control, especially if lightly loaded on wet roads. I bought the one new with brakes on only one axle for that reason.

I wish I could remember which make brake locks up first, but in any event, the other axle continues to roll straight ahead.
