Fan shroud screws

Postby stevey30 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 6:22 pm

I am trying to get the fan shroud off and 2 of the bolts are being stubborn, would it hurt anything to put a little heat to them? The radiator is on the cub and full of coolant,I thought about using my impact screwdriver but don't want to break the radiator by hitting on it.I have viewed other post about grinding the heads off,but that seems like a lot of work having to drill out the old bolts and possibly have to retap the threads.Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you tried a rust penetrant like Kroil or PB Blaster?

Yes,they have been sprayed and have sat about 10-12 hours,I first cleaned up the area with a wire wheel and removed all the old paint, rust and crud build up,then gave em a heavy dose of penetrating oil, still no luck.

I've had good luck with penetrant and an impact screwdriver. Radiator supports will handle the impact. I've had no radiator damage as a result.

Well I may try my impact with a little heat and see if it works,I am really trying to avoid having to take the radiator off.

Not sure from your post if you are removing dogleg to get the hood off to get to the shroud or are you talking about the 4 bolts in the corners of the shroud. I think they are all 10-24 but if not someone will correct this. If you are working on the shroud bolts my best luck has been to cut the bolts or simply twist them off then redrill and tap the holes. That part is not a bad job but the 4 bolts in the lower end of the doglegs is a different story. If you have to drill them, go slow and shallow or you will drill into the lower radiator water jacket. Good Luck, Stan

the shroud screws go into the radiator supports, not the radiator, so just you will not damage the radiator by using an impact screwdriver, unless you miss the screwdriver that is.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Impact on lowest setting should break them loose.
