cub carb upgrade

Postby gusbratz » Tue Mar 25, 2014 11:19 pm

I have been struggling with my carb, pretty much at my wits end trying to get it to stop dripping. I think maybe the top plate is warped like a U shape from over tightening the screws which is causeing the float to rub on the side of the float bowl. new float, needle seat carb kit ect. any way I vaugley remember somebody in farm show replacing a cub carb with a tillotson off of a chainsaw, I have lots of old saws, anybody ever try that?

The top can be straightened pretty easily. Is the float adjusted properly to the correct levels?

yes, I think 1/13/16 off the top of my head.(what ever was on the tsc cheat sheet that came in the kit) I messed with the old float so much trying to set it lower and higher that It broke, then I bought a whole new float. tried a needle and seat from a TSC kit, tried lapping my old needle and seat, tried a kohler neoprene needle and brass seat. when i shake the carb I can hear the float move. I have had it off and on about 100 times and ever variation in between. you know how it is, sometimes you pull a carb and blow it out with air and it is good to go, other times you do everything and it still won't work. search me. :?

I never trust the instructions that come with the TSC kits. They are somewhat universal for other carbs and not always the best. I'm not sure what you mean by 1/13/16. Here is the proper setting for a Cub.

I have no idea about chain saw carb that will fit.

There is a how to on getting the carb top straight.

Post in "The Vine" for someone to repair your carburetor. Several folks on this site repair carburetors.

They also have rebuilt and tested carburetors for sale.
I have an excuse. CRS.

A chain saw carburetor wouldn't be right, anyway. I suppose one could adapt a side-draft carburetor from (say) a Kohler or similar ~10 hp engine. But it would be a lot of work. Probably have to substantially modify the manifold and governor linkage. So getting a functioning carb of the stock design is the far easier approach.

Next, replacement of old parts (radiator, seals, etc.) + painting.

Can you tell where the drip is originating? At the bowl gasket along the upper edge of the carb, out the bowl drain at the bottom of the carb or elsewhere?

Drip or steady stream?

IMHO, steady stream means the float is stuck. Drip means the needle is leaking.

Not much you can do about the needle leaking. They're all garbage in this day and age.

Frankly, I have no idea what the point of replacing the needle is. I've never seen one that is visibly worn.

If you set the float at 1-13/16", it would never let the needle open, so that's not the problem.

Above link is a test to determine the source of the fuel leak.

Hopefully you kept all of the old carburetor parts.
