THROTTLE, GOVERNOR ISSUES

Postby twotone » Sat Mar 22, 2014 5:25 pm

I finally got my 73 Cub all put back together after putting a clutch in it last year. Runs like a clock, starts with a touch of the key, but has problems. I never got drive it when I got it because the clutch was shot and the gov linkage was frozen.

Here's what it does. 1st notch on throttle is idle, 2nd notch is close to max rpm, 3rd notch is definitely over revved. It's been in my Son's garage all this time, but I drove it home today, 6 blocks. Gov does not kick in going up hills, but 3rd notch works without over revving until you reach the top of the hill. The only slop in the gov linkage is the spring holes are a little ovaled. I also noticed it doesn't have a bolt with jam nut on top of the gov like my 53.

Any ideas?

Does the pivot arm for the spring move freely, is the spring good, not all stretched out, does it have the clip on the cylinder head to support the governor rod, is the linkage to the carb adjusted correctly?

Tim, the pivot arm is free, new spring, has the clip, carb linkage adjusted as per the book, and nothing is binding. I can't figure this one out.

the shaft that goes in to the governor with the woodruff key on it, is the key way sheared off maybe, if not I would be pulling the governor apart, perhaps weights came apart

Tim, I had the gov out to free up the lever, and cleaned everything up. The last thing I want to do is pull the gov, but I suspect you are right. It's obvious the gov isn't working, I was just hoping someone had a similar experience with an ez fix. Thanks for your input.

I guess I have to bite the bullet and take the hood off (dang!) and go through all my linkage and fix the oval holes, and replace the Gov spring. It has a new spring, but it somehow got smooshed so it's actually short. I did every combination of linkage adjustment and bumper spring adjustment, and I finally got the Gov working, but it surges bad when any load is put on the engine. I also don't like the new springs. There was a post on this about having to open up the end loops to install them. Are the old type springs available anywhere? It's funny how un-important this seems to me when I have a backup Cub that runs great. I'll need some motivation to start this job. All the nuts that are supposed to be welded to the inside of the hood are not. The headlights are real fun.

Theoretically, opening up the loops effectively lengthens the spring. Cutting a bit off the ends of the loops to create the needed clearance allows the spring to be installed with minimal trouble and does not affect operation. That is what works for me.

Is a 73 different from early Cubs? :? I just disconnect the wires and push them back through the grommets and lift off the hood with lights still attached. Does that not work on later Cubs?

They are bolted to the side panels of the grill.

Re: THROTTLE, GOVERNOR ISSUES Fixed!!

I got motivated and took the thing apart to get at the governor. I put in new needle bearings and a seal. Everything looked good inside so I moved to the outside. I owe 2 forum members for making my life a lot easier today. One is the use of roll pins to fix the oblong holes, two is clipping off a little bit of the spring ends so they go on easier. After about 5 minutes of fine tuning, no hunting whatsoever, doesn't hunt when putting load on, full range of throttle, and the gov works when going uphill. Thanks to all for your input!

Mike, it wasn't too bad. It sure is a lot of work to just replace a spring. It took me longer to make the bushings for the spring holes. The only roll pins I had were stainless, not easy to cut.

Haha! Wish we could get together, but Maine is a bit "up there" away from my typical travel plans for work. However, I will be heading to New England in the coming month or two, so a mini-fest is always a possibility!
