Gang real mower

Postby ducati750 » Tue Jun 21, 2005 5:12 am

Has enyone ever seen one of these types of mowers for sale anywhere? it looks like it would be a good way to go since it would not rob any power from the PTO. It has to be easier on the engine and therefore promote a longer engine life than a 59" 3 blade mower. I remember mowing my grandmoters lawn wioth a push type reel mower when I was a kid and it made a real nice cut, as long as it was sharp. http://www.tm-tractor.com/gbrochures/lawngang.htm

I have often thought of building one very much like that using reel type mowers from the hardware store. They do mow very clean and smooth and lay the grass over in nice stripes. We use a large industrial model on our fields at the school I work at.

Nice photo thanks for sharing. ds

They don't cut the dandelions, though, and they don't do well at all in long grass.

Got one behind the barn: very little use. It was my neighbors but he moved to a subdivision and left it at my place last fall for storage i guess. Im sure he would part with it. PM me if interested, i could include pics if you like.
Forgot to mention it is a pull behind mower and i believe it is 8 feet wide.

Ducati...Real mowers (especially ganged real mowers) were BEFORE the advent of the rotary mower. The Cub had ganged real mowers that were mid-mount...rear mount...AND, FRONT mounted!

They are very hard to keep adjusted so that they cut well (especially the smaller real mowers) . The larger ones used by golf courses (Worthington) in a 3-gang setup are better for cutting grass (up to 8 inches high)...and easier to adjust and keep sharp. :D Look for these at golf courses where they are fast being replaced by hydrauliclly operated riding units  .

gang reel mowers

Postby william menges » Wed Jun 22, 2005 9:39 am

ducati,
first let me say, i just bought one !!!!!
i saw a picture of one in a cub/cubcadet book my daughter was showing me in tsc and said if i ever ... i'd buy it. saw one listed on yt and called .it is on my 57 cub now i need to make ajustments on the lift parts and then see how in mows. i am thinking that my lawn will not do so well with this type mower because it is not golf course type lawn it s more glorified feild.but i got the mower and if nothing else its a neet (rare)show piece.
hpoe you find yours
bill
ps. my guess is you might be into two wheeled tractors!!! ones that require balance and lean to turn. ones that on fast throttle advance become uni-tractors. if you catch my exhaust. i road raced a 74 sport 750 duc in the early 80's

Bill, good to hear of another Ducatisi on this fourm. Mine is a 1990 750 Sport. When you get your mower up and running I would love to see some photos. Come to think of it I would love to see some photos before you get it mounted. Thanks

Bill:

I think we would all like to see pics of your mowers. Maybe somebody might even have a manual around for it.

Hmmm, I always seem to be fishin for manuals now don't I

Ducati:

I am working on a belly mount mower for Ellie now. I hope to have the mock up finished in a few weeks. Sketches are almost done and just about ready to start cutting stock.

Ducati750...Do a search on "E-Pay" under "gang reel mower" and you'll come up with about 5 hits  ! Unless you've got a golf course type lawn (Bermuda, or other close-clipped grass, other than Fescue) you'll probably NOT be happy with the results of cutting a lawn with a set of gang reel mowers!

"real" mowers... Are there fake mowers too? How do they work? Do you imagine that the grass gets cut when you go over it with a fake mower?

Just joshin' ya guys!

Like everyone else said, and has been my experience too, you need goood grass on smooth ground for the gang mowers to work. I like my woods 42 because it cuts nicely, dandelions and real thick stemmed stuff, and lumpy ground too. However, if I had nice smoothe ground and grass that wasn't mostly weeds, I'd have a gang mower. The neighbor up the street has one on his horse farm and it does a beautiful job!

Let em jaw and fuss with you Country, You not the only one with spelling originality. Beverly tells me "Your spelling is origional cause Im the first to spellit that way." Kind a run word together at times too. What the heck if the thought gets accross.
