Farmall Cub

Good day all!

I'm about to be a proud owner of my very first ever tractor, a 1950s era Farmall Cub. I'm buying a home where the original owner of the tractor passed and the wife is moving to another home, leaving the tractor for me (I asked her to keep it on the property instead of selling it).

The original owner passed away about a year ago and the tractor has been sitting for about 2 years.

What would be the first things to check out and verify before even attempting to start the tractor?

Make sure you prime the engine oil pump before attempting a start.

The Cub FAQ's at the top of the page will help some (including "priming the oil pump" before you try to start it). Manuals are also available via the link, the owner and operator manuals are a "must read". If you click on either "PDF manuals" or "Rudi's Manual Server" in the toolbar above, you can read or download an owner's manual which will give you basic information on your Cub. You'll find a lot of friendly and knowledgeable Cub lovers here, so feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Welcome to the forum from Arkansas. Check the obvious, oil, water, prime the oil pump, and probably drain and replace fuel especially if it smells old, and then watch the oil pressure, it should come up in 20 seconds or so. Then of course change oil before doing much running. Then full grease and lub job.

Thanks for the replies all. I'll get back to you all on how it goes. I have went through the PDFs though and looked at them thoroughly and through the threads here which is the reason I registered in the first place. Just wasn't sure, since its been sitting for a while, that it needed just the "basics" before trying to start it. I did see the prime the oil pump mentioned a lot on the most common oil pressure problems!

I look forward to being newest n00b on these forums within the coming months. You guys have put quite a collection here and have given me lots of hope to keep this Cub alive and working for many years to come. Thank you!

I'm not completely sure what all the attachments are, but that'll come after its running. I did see a disk plow, but the rest was covered by other stuff.

Since you don't know when the fluids were last changed, I'd drain the oil and change it unless it looks really clean. Change the filter. As others have said, prime the oil pump by squirting oil in the hole at the top of the filter housing and cranking the engine over (ignition off) until you see oil spurting out of that hole. Put some fresh gas to it, and have at it.

The Tranny oil, final drive oil and bearing grease in the front wheels can wait until you have a chance to get it running and try driving it, but they should be changed, too, before long.

Along with everything that has been said, i would try to go to the upcoming "CUB FEST" being held in Randolph Va.
on the 25 and 26 of April. Just 75 miles from you. (Looks like through the mountains) You will meet a bunch of the members and learn alot. Bring your cub if you can but not required. Have fun with your new cub. Be safe these cubs turn over if you are on a hill and the engine side is down hill.

I just might go to Cub Fest. And I'll keep that in mind about the turn over.

Congrats on becoming a new owner to an old Cub! Welcome to the forum! Looks like everyone above has ya covered.

BTW: You've posted 4 times already and we are STILL waiting on pictures!! Seriously, when/if you get a chance to post some pics, do so, we'd love to see it.

Nice!! Looks like you have a set of 144 cultivators mounted on the Cub. The disk would indicate there is probably a 193 moldboard plow lurking around there somewhere. Good luck, enjoy the ride.
