not to speak Ill of those that have passed on , just in general I tend to wonder about the "mechanics" skill level when something has been "gone through" . one of the last cubs I bought was for the mystical $500 (really) . A non-runner , and I thought I was paying a little too much, but it was all there . after a set of new points , she is the strongest red cub I have , my favorite red cub , and the only one I have that will hand crank , at worst, the second try . coppersmythe...................( caveat : I spent a year looking daily in craigslist and the local paper . Here is another perspective: the original poster only wants to be able to plow. Make SURE that a Cub will plow well enough for you, they are not the best tractor for plowing above a small plot..... Although that 2-way thing is pretty cool!

Brutalfly and I have been PMing back and forth for about a week now. We live less than 10 miles from one another (as the crow flies).

The Cub in question was overhauled by the same man who did my 1948 Cub (bought from my neighbor's fencerow with poison ivy all over it; viewtopic.php?f=122&t=71703&hilit=+poison+ivy). I know him personally and he does excellent work. So, I'd say the doubt about "who done it" can be removed from the equation.

I encouraged Brutalfly to post these pics and ask for comments to which he's received quite a few, which is good, because they show the wide range of experience and knowledge I was afraid I was not providing to him during our PMs. More is better in this case.

Agreed, $3K is a lot of money to plop down all at once, but if it runs right, he may not have to put more money into it for a very long time.

Offer $2500 if it's what you want and runs to suit you. $2250 would be better but the lady most likely won't go for that. $3000 is to much in my opinion. It's worth $250 more if it's local and what you want. I just drove to Akron OH for a cub :)

Yea, the "dealing with widows" problem bit me once too. A friend from church was doing some work at a lady's place and saw an old red tractor in the barn. He called me after she said she wanted the shed cleaned out. I went over a few days later. The shed was about a 12' x 12' shed, that was piled nearly full, but in the middle was a 1950s Lo Boy, wht a snow blade on it.

I asked if it was ok if I moved some things to clear out around the tractor and she said sure, she was going to throw everything out. I spent an hour digging, and finally got the tractor cleared out around. The tractor was in pretty good shape, all original, all 4 original tires flat. Interestingly, there was a 4" concrete slab in a frame hung under the tractor. I went and got the lady and she told me that her husband bought the tractor from the local monistary where they used it to plow snow. Someone had fabricated the frame and concrete slab as a weight for plowing snow.

We talked a bit and I offered her $500 for the tractor, not running, not knowing even if it was locked up or not (didn't have the hand crank), but part of the deal was I'd clean out the barn and haul off all of the junk to the dump. I figured it would be one load with my truck and trailer, so not a problem. She thought it was great, and I gave her the $500. However, since all 4 tires were totally flat, and the shed was about 40-feet behind the house where I couldn't get a truck to it, I decided to go home to get one of my other tractors, some comalongs and change out of my office clothes into some work clothes.

An hour later I returned with one of my other tractors and supplies. She came to the door with the money in hand and said she could not sell the tractor. Her nephew told her it was worth $5000. I started to argue a bit, even offered her $300 more for the tractor, but it was done. I took my $500 and headed home.

The reply I probably wouldn't have though of at the time would be:

You should tell your nephew how much you appreciate his help. You should reward him by splitting the value. Have him clean out the rest of the shed and then let him have the tractor for $2,500. And by the way, my $500 offer stands, call me after you get the junk cleared out of the way.

This is a real live $5000 Cub sold at auction today.

I bought the next one to it. Going to be our son's lawn mowing Cub.

Gave the strong dollar for it, but I feel very comfortable with it.
