Postby 47cubforever » Tue Mar 04, 2014 11:57 pm

I have farmall cub 1947. Completely rebuilt. Had to pull distributor apart. Just the hard wear Didn't take it off the machine tho. What is the right setting with the pistons and the rotator in the distributor for it to start. Where should every thing he placed ??!!

Number 1 cylinder should be at the top of it's compression stroke, rotor should point at the number 1 tower on the dist cap.

Are you sure you have a distributor or do you have a mag. timing procedure is a little diferent depending on what you have.

You said you had to remove the distributor...so I'm presuming you mean "cap" and rotor, not the entire ignition unit. The distributor cap is keyed so it only goes on one way. I'm guessing you removed the wires and want to know where the wires reconnect to. Correct? The firing order is stamped on the block on the left hand side and is 1,3,4,2. As to the rotor, yes as stated the cylinder number one should be at top dead center.

Here you go:
1 - Remove the spark plug for the front-most cylinder. Grab the hand crank and slowly turn the crank with your thumb over the spark plug hole until you feel outward pressure on your thumb. Stop.
2 - Look at the crankshaft pulley on the left side of the tractor and see if the pin on the block is lining up with the notch in the pulley. If you stopped cranking when you felt the outward pressure then you're probably a bit early and need to turn the hand crank a bit more. Slowly!
3 - Once lined up you should be at top dead center of cylinder number one.
4 - Pull the rotor arm and point it at roughly 1:00 when looking at the ignition unit from the operator's seat.
5 - Put the distributor cap back on with no wires and either mark the cap with a sharpie marker or scratch in "#1" at the post that lies at 1:00 (just to the right of the top of 12:00). This is where the plug wire for the front-most cylinder (#1) connects to.
6 - The rest are connected clockwise when looking at the distributor from the operator's seat. Follow the wire for cylinder #3 and connect to the next post to the right and so on and so forth.
7 - If you didn't remove or adjust the entire battery ignition unit then this is all you have to do. If you did remove the battery ignition unit then we have some more steps to cover. Presuming of course you have a battery ignition and not a magneto as 64/67lo-boy mentioned.
8 - If it's running rough you may have to move the rotor arm a bit. I'd recommend loosening the bolts holding the ignition unit on the machine and turning the entire unit while the Cub is running until you get to the sweet spot; then tighten the bolts back down. But if it was running OK before then I'd leave that alone unless you can't get the rotor right and you start kicking the tractor.
