That is because your trans is full of water and your gears are slinging it up and out the only place it could find. You need to drain it, flush it and then refill it to the proper level.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: How is this possible?
Looks like the tranny is full of water/oil and it probably splashed up there. Time to drain and flush. Take another picture when you pull the shifter off.

That line of thought is what got it to this point. You need to do it sooner than "sometime". Water and gears don't work so well. Your next post may be, "How do I repair a whining transmission".

It could be worse. It could have looked like a TO-30 parts tractor I picked up years ago. The PO told it worked fine when it was warm out but in the winter you couldn't put it in gear and the Hyd did work. When I opened up the side cover this is what I found.

Milkshake anyone?
Take Barnyard's advice to drain, rinse with kerosene and replace with gear oil. You'll be glad you did.

Brendan, best practice is to drain and refill as described. I don't think I have ever seen an old Farmall slobber oil from the shifter, so it has to be pretty full of stuff. The reality is that there are thousands of these tractors all over everywhere that have had the same gear oil in them for years. Growing up I never remember changing the rear end oil in much of anything--in our mild climate I think you can get away with that a little more than in other areas. No rear end trouble in anything either. Anyway, doing a drain-flush-n' fill will be a good project once the weather warms up. In the meantime, don't stress if you need to use it but haven't changed the oil yet.

Re: How is this possible?
Id still say its safe to drain it. If you aren't going to use the tractor, better to have an empty transmission than one sitting full of water.

I thought they came from the factory with a whine to match the growl in the bull gear! Is there something wrong with mine?????

Re: How is this possible?
Well, on the bright side you must have two really good differential shaft seals. I would drain it immediately and refill with gear oil, doesn't take much. A few dollars for peace of mind, any freezing day and your Cub won't move. Then when you get a little time/warmer weather/spring maintenence day, do the flush. While you're waiting for it to drain, pull the plug on the steering and see what's in there. Could be empty, could be the same.

Perhaps "growl" would have been a better word to use.

Re: How is this possible?
Last year, over fifty inches of rain fell in northwest Pennsylvania...that's a lot of water. When I bought my FCub a few years back, the transmission had the same yellow "pudding" fill, right up to the gear shift cover. I drained what I could, re-filled with SAE30 weight motor oil, drove it around without unnecessary transmission load, drained again and filled with ninety-weight gear oil. I recommend not flushing with kerosene or diesel fuel or other solvents. A motor oil re-fill and flush will suffice short of dismantling and hand cleaning the transmission box. I can't explain where operators got the idea that tractors can be left out in the weather continuously. Another problem results from re-filling with too much oil. The transmission box is only about a third of the way full when at oil capacity.
