I believe there have been a couple built, but I do not remember by who. I think the easiest way would be to use one of the 12 volt powered broadcast spreaders made for an ATV or small tractor. if your cub is not 12 volts, one of the jump starter packs or a small riding mower battery would run it for quite a while.

I have always wanted to build a spreader for wood ash, since I have plenty of that, but an agitating system to keep it falling down to the spreader is the challenge, wood ash tends to pack and not flow, but sure is great for traction and removing ice. it sure tracks in bad though.

Why not get a tow-behind fertilizer spreader?

I think my Garber seeder could double as a salt/sand spreader. I modified it to sit center of the drawbar and run off the PTO via a pulley.
Holds about 40 pounds in the can.

I have found the tow behind when there is not much weight in it on snow and ice the wheels dont spin. I have been thinking of adding some weights, chains or even some sheet metal screws in the tires to help it grip. I am hoping for spring for so I can think of it again in the fall.

Thats one reason I don't want a tow behind never had anything but problems with them also my barn yard is set up with small paths to get to the buildings tractor would be in reverse half the time.
