1948 Cub Will Not Start
Seeking some guidance gentlemen.
Here in the North East, its dry and we're basking in the low 50s - so I took the 48' Cub out for a spin. She started immediately and drove around, purring nicely. Loads of fun. I stopped, shut her down and came back about an hour later to ride some more. When I attempt to start, it feebly attempted to turn over. I thought the battery was dead, but the lights come on, nice and bright. I do not have a hand crank, but will purchase one soon.
Recommendations on next steps would be appreciated!

Take leads off battery, clean terminals bright, leads bright inside, put on again. Give it a try. Has worked for me.

No dice - we have a Cub with a charged battery (confirmed via volt meter), but when I pull the start rod, nothing.

Did you shut the ignition switch off when you shut it down?

Check negative battery cable where it grounds to tractor.
Check voltage at starter end of battery cable with meter grounded some where on bare metal of tractor.
Make sure starter mount bolts are tight and not rusted or painted on mating surfaces.

Turn the lights on and pull the starter rod. if they go out you either have a bad battery or a bad connection. If they only dim a good bit, your starter may be locked into the ring gear. In that case loosen the starter bolts and rock it in 3rd gear (ignition OFF). If lights do not dim at all you either have a bad starter switch or bad starter.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I turned the lights on and pulled the starter rod. Lights went out (bad battery or connection). Will follow Rodney's check-points and see where we sit tomorrow. Stay tuned. Thank you!

Re: 1948 Cub Will Not Start
I'm stumped gents.
Tractor will not start and moreover, the lights do not turn on now.
I checked the negative battery cable where it grounds to tractor - bright and tight.
I checked voltage at starter end of battery cable with meter grounded some where on bare metal of tractor - showing about 7 volts.
I made sure the starter mount bolts are tight and not rusted or painted on mating surfaces - tight.
Even had the battery re-charged at a local garage.
Could it be the starter switch? If so, how can I by pass it to attempt a start and confirm a bad starter switch?

Make sure the tractor is in neutral then put a set of jumper cables on a known good battery. Put the negative side of the other end of the cables on the starter switch mounted on top of the starter and the positive end on a bare metal spot of the tractor and make sure you have a good ground. Pull the starter rod. If nothing happens you may have a bad starter switch. If that happens, take the switch off the starter and put the negative end of the jumper on the nob on top of the starter the switch sits on. If nothing happens you have a problem at the starter.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: 1948 Cub Will Not Start
Take this same reading while pulling the starter rod. If goes to 0 put meter on cable terminal and do again. If still 0 put meter on cable clamp at battery. If 0, put meter on battery. Another question, can you turn the engine by hand?Scout wrote:.......

Re: 1948 Cub Will Not Start
What John is eluding to is that something may be seizing up keeping the engine from turning over or making it more difficult to turn over.
Often, the fan needs to be lubricated. Another place is to check the starter/generator.
Last, the clutch. Most people start their cubs in neutral (shake hands with the shifter) and with the clutch out.
