Overhaul 1949 Farmall Cub

Postby jdavis1951two » Sat Feb 15, 2014 9:43 am

Do you mean that the parts just to overhaul the engine of my 1949 Farmall Cub is going to amount to $1100? If someone would do the complete overhaul I could see that, but just the parts, for the engine seems a little outrageous. Call me cheap call me frugal, call me broke call me anything you want.

Would like to know the best source for parts, and someone I can talk to about what I need, and where i can get a better carberetor for this tractor. :lost: :help:

I have never ordered anything from TISCO and cannot attest to the quality of their parts, but they sell a comprehensive engine rebuild kit for Farmall Cubs for less than $500.

I rebuilt my Cub with Tisco parts and the quality is first rate in my opinion. I suggest you shop around and compare prices. Prices can vary a lot.

My recommendation. Disassemble engine, measure, determine if machine work required, and then parts.

Shop around. Try local auto parts stores, that's where I get most of my engine parts.

Do not purchase parts until you know what SIZE you need.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Jdavis, I have never had any machine shop work done in your area, but I would think that around Fredericktown or the Jackson/Cape area you could find machine shops that for the 1100 would both provide parts and do the machine work on the engine. If not there is a very good old time machine shop at Belleview Mo. (about 55 or so miles from you) that if you take him the engine will disassemble, measure, bore, provide and install new pistons and rings, as well as turn crank and install new bearings, plus do the valve job for the $600 price range.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

That would be well worth the 55 mile drive, unless you love to do it yourself. Carb, should be able to clean and rebuild unless it is damaged beyond repair. Can also straighten the top, and get rebuild kit if you need one. Take it all apart before you worry about parts.

That’s a good price:

For me…$567.00 for everything John mentioned (except disassemble/reassemble engine and crankshaft) plus… including valves, springs, guides and seats. The crankshaft was $75.00 more.

You might call the NAPA machine shop in Cape. They did the cylinder and head work on my John Deere A. They did excellent work and in less than 2 weeks. I had it shipped and returned at the local NAPA store and paid for everything there also. It saved me a lot of driving.
