Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
Ok so I have been building cars, race quads, and such for over 30 years and I still havent learned dont forget the obvious. My cub has always been like my chainsaw, there is a certain way to start it, with a certain combo of settings to choke throttle and such. But I came to the conclusion that it just isnt gonna start in the winter. Warmer weather you got a chance but cold weather forget it. I chocked it up to needing to the adjust valves and internal engine freshing up.
Yesterday I gave it a try just for shoots and giggles, same result crank crank crank no start. Then Captain Obvious showed up and threw a brick at my head and it all came to me. While pulling the choke rod and adjusting it every way possible I just happened to look at the little tab on the outside of the carb. Now you guys just got it didnt ya. It wasnt moving. The clamp attached to the rod and the shaft just spins on the shaft. I flipped the choke lever to the closed position and darn if she didnt fire up for the first time in cold weather. I felt like such a freaking moron.
So any insight on fixes, i am gonna to pull the carb off today and see what if any damage to the shaft is present, I can see that it looks like the screw that tightens the clamp to the shaft is snnapped off. Is a shaft available seperate and how hard is it to find the clamp by its self. I will do some research tonight when I see what I have to work with but wanted to see what the experts may have to say. Thank you for any help.
So remember DONT FORGET THE OBVIOUS

Re: Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
Use to be a post or two on repairing the choke lever. Tried, couldn't find it/them. Also someone sells replacement choke levers.
I repaired my broken choke lever by drilling and tapping a second hole opposite the hole for the choke shaft.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
There are clamp-on levers available as replacements. George Willer offered them occasionally.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Internation ... 3f2d293f3b
The eBay item is expensive.
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/fl/522fp.htm
The one from TM is more like the ones that George made and probably will work better on a shaft that is worn, as yours probably is. Prices have climbed over the years.

It is almost guaranteed that your shaft is fine. You may need to remove remains of the lever that are stuck in the splines of the shaft. I have used one of the replacement levers from TM and it works fine.

Re: Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
The choke shaft is "knurled" on the end where the lever clamps. If that has worn down to nearly smooth, you may want to replace it at the same time. PM sent.
Bob
Edit: McDonald Carbs sells just the choke shaft for $12.00@.

Re: Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
We have all done that, and that is not as obvious as one I pulled, though mine was easier to fix. At Cubarama 2 or 3 years ago they were getting ready to start the parade and I asked Cub Bud's son if he wanted to ride with me. He climbed up and sat on my knee as we started out and about halfway through the park my cub died. Rather than having Brandon get down and me climbing off the tractor I spotted Tractor Chick's Dad along side the road watching the parade and hollered " would you mind turning my gas on!!", which he did while laughing.
And then there is the 90 year old neighbor I help on occasion that asked me to help him get his cub started one day when he could not get it going after it setting for a few months. When I got there a couple hours later, knowing he always shuts the gas off anytime he did not use one I asked "Do I need to turn the gas on?", thinking he may have shut it off while waiting on me. The startled look he gave me answered my question.

Re: Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
I had Jay Smith's cub in my shop last week to diagnose the engine. turns out it only needed the valves adjusted, timing, wires, and carb adjustments. went to load it in a hurry one cold morning to return it to him. it ran partway out of the shop and died. gas must be off, I'm thinking...nope got gas, will fire with ether but won't run. must have a carb problem, i'll let Jay fix it. so I get the Oliver 60 to tow it on the trailer. on the drive up to Jay's I'm thinking it's probably a stuck float needle, and if I just tapped the carb it probably would have restarted and the ride up there will probably cure it as well.....and it started right up in his yard.

Re: Still havent learned dont overlook the obvious !!!
only a gallon or so... perhaps low head pressure contributed to the problem.
