Farmall Cub

My TC unit was leaking hydro fluid around the control valve. I had used a similar sized o-ring, but apparently, not exactly the right size. Ordered a replacement from TM last week and tore into it over the weekend. Mounted my blade yesterday and reworked some of my gravel driveway. As of now, no leaks.

Put the tire chains on before putting her away and, you guessed it: I'm ready for winter.

It is highly likely that you already knew that the composition of the O-ring is crucial in addition to the size. No doubt many of the elastomerics of today were developed after the Cub came along. Not sure what was used originally, perhaps neoprene. Viton would be a good choice for petroleum products that might also be moderately hot, as hydraulic fluid can be. Viton is one of the more expensive materials. O-rings of EPDM are great for plumbing as they resist water and heat well. But they die quickly in the presence of petroleum products. Lots of the hardware store rings are EPDM.

Most o-ring these days are made of Buna-N or Viton. Either will work well as the Cub Hydraulics never get that hot. Buna -N has been around for a long time, holds up well in hydraulic oil and is probably what originally came on the Cub.

Mounting the blade and chains is on my Thanksgiving weekend schedule of things to do.

Stanton, This is the first year I've had a blade mounted before I needed to use it. Probably won't have enough to plow this year. Tonight is predicted to drop 2-4".

Bob, I remember when you said, "it's probably not going to rain cause we hardly ever get rain." What was it, around 12 inches the following week? Maybe you'll at least get enough snow to push it around with the blade.

I suppose you and I and Barnyard was just more than Longmont could handle at one time. It wanted to cleanse itself immediately after we departed.

Thanks Bus Driver and Ricky; not sure what the material was made of, but I'm thinking the size was the critical issue here. The ring I pulled out was just a fraction smaller than the TM one I replaced it with. Checked again Wed night (after working with it Tues) and still dry. So, hope that's the end of the leak.

Funny, I used the same off-the-shelf o-ring in my other Cub TC unit and not a leak at all.
