Craig, that missing end off the coil wire might still be down in the coil. If it's not there, your coil has likely undergone what we call a "field modification". Someone stripped the wire back and jammed it into the coil to make it work. You find that a lot with old tractors....

That wire sounds like shade tree mech. It might work that way and might not. Check that the end didn't come off and stick in the coil. Check the wites at the dist end. take them off1 at a time and replace it before you check the next one. At times there is green corrosion at the ends too. Talk to FIL if you have any questions.
