Farmall Cub

Hi Guys,
Te seniment bowl is leaking at the shut off valve.Is there any way I can stop this leak? Seems to just leak when I turn off the gas a drip but went out knowest gas there as a good size peddle under the cub.
Any suggestion?

They can sometimes be fixed. Take the valve apart, and check the ball end of the valve for burrs, etc. Also there is a packing that goes behind the valve, in the nut. I used some graphite plumbing rope to repack mine, and it worked just fine. Just to be sure, you need that valve turned all the way in (off) so the ball seats, or all the way out (on) so the other side of the ball seats in that packing. There is no "in between" position, or it will likely leak.

I just tightened the nut behind the valve a bit on mine and it stopped a small leak...Had to do it on several tractors...As Rick said they can be rebuilt, but just tightening the nut may be a quick fix for awhile....Dave

The post above will probably fix your leak. I pulled the nut off mine and used a piece of string to replace the packing. A simple solution.... wish I had done it sooner. Good Luck, Papa.

Don't tighten the nut too much. Just snug it about 1/8 turn and see what it does. If it still leaks give it another 1/8 turn. If you can't get it to stop, replacing the packing as Rick & Papa said should do the trick. I replaced mine and it has never leaked since.

this thread helped me, although i think i have another issue.

the fuel shutoff on mine doesn't seem to work at all. it spins and spins, doesn't go in or out.

i tightened the castle nut and the leaking stopped but i can't shut the fuel off. any ideas, before i drain the tank and take it out? thanks....

You might drain fuel and take sediment bowl off w/o taking the hood off.
I think you will need to empty fuel tank and take the sediment bowl off and replace..

thanks mike, thats what i was thinking.

i used up most of the fuel in the tank on saturday (lots of seat time with the 22 mower, reclaiming about an acre of yard). there's not much fuel left in the tank.

i guess i'll order up a new one, i've got to get her ready for snow now.

This year I replaced the shutoff valve on two Cubs with units from TM. Problem solved. The valves that came on both Cubs were not the genuine article, probably imported replacements. TM sells the real thing.

When you unscrew the sediment bowl from the tank, be sure you have something under it to catch the extra gas. The inlet for the sediment bowl sticks up above the bottom of the tank, so there will still be gas in the tank after draining. When I pulled my sediment bowl this summer, I got a pint or more coming out as I unscrewed it.
