Re: Cub Plow with Canadian Bottom?
Weather and time finally worked in my favor and I got the pictures of the plow bottoms. The first 2 pictures are of the Rex bottom and the last 3 are of the Ace bottom.
I sprayed some WD-40 on the back of the Rex bottom to bring out the stenciling, there is not any visible stenciling on the Ace bottom, but I suspect it has worn off and would be similar styling.

Well, so much for "The Show Me State" motto. Don't miss your chance on this one, John.

Re: Cub Plow with Canadian Bottom?
Glad to finally see some pictures. Yes, your ace pictures show the same shear/point and moldboard as my 193 plow. I have sent some pics of mine to Rudi for him to post but he hasn't been on the forum much lately. Have been trying to find a source for replacement parts but no luck yet. Have posted the painted(stenciled) part #s for the ace in a previous post.
Thanks
Jerry

Here are Jerry's pix.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Ok from the land side to the point on the left (third pic., last post) doesn't look very wide. Did it take ten inches of soil? Wonder if it pulled easier than the cub plow? Thanks for the pictures. Brain is not as fogy.

cubbrian wrote:The moldboards are made in such a way as to only turn the sod over 1/2 or 3/4 depending on which one. The one in the picture appears to be the 8 inch "Rex" moldboard. They were supposedly used for certain types of soil that would become unworkable if the sod was completely turned over.
Unworkable if completely turned over?
Could one of the FC.com "Plow Kings" explain to the rest of us plow newbie's, under what conditions a guy would want this? I seems to recall somebody putting on a plow set up/demo school at one of the Cub gatherings. Wish I could attend. I would think the science of the plow is more in depth than people think. Learning tons here. Thanks.

Re: Cub Plow with Canadian Bottom?
The distance (width) from the landside across to the point is 9" as it appears in my pictures. This plow does turn the sod completely over against the previously plowed furrow. It works best or does the neatest job if I plow in second gear. Easily plows 6" deep. This is a cub 193 plow.

Re: Cub Plow with Canadian Bottom?
Well, in an effort to better understand why the different style bottom I recalled doing some research on an Oliver #19 wooden beam walking plow I purchased a little over a year ago and at that time I had found a book called The Oliver Plow Book: A Treatise on Plows and Plowing (1920). I remembered it had way more information than I needed to know. Looking it over again I found one of the sections was on moldboards. I scanned through that section and have a little better understanding of the different styles of moldboards now. The book is available as a free google ebook here:http://books.google.com/books/about/The_Oliver_Plow_Book.html?id=pSxJAAAAIAAJ
and with a neat lady reading it to you avaialble from The California Digital Library (hit the speaker button in the upper right corner of the book window) here: https://archive.org/details/oliverplowbooktr00bacorich
The moldboard section starts on page 97. Page 109 and 110 has what they call a Scotch type, that looks like the Canadian bottom to me, with an explanation of it's use.

yes I am late to the party. Steve...did you ever find that Rex bottom? I have my uncle's 2 furrow #8 (maybe #8C?) plough and an unused Rex point. His farm was in central Ontario, sandy loam soil. Let me know if I can help

I just found this thread. I would like to contact the member"reamake" (Steve). He mentioned here that he was hoping to make ace bottom parts. I would love to know if he has been able to do that!

"Reamake" has not visited the site for over five years. Perhaps someone else may have an answer for you.

Re: Cub Plow with Canadian Bottom?
Google Ploworx. Steve Rea is his name. I believe he’s in Ohio. He made me a new point or share for my ace bottom. Works amazing. He does great work. Hope this helps.
