PTO Not Working

After joining my '47 back together (also greased the crankcase end of the transmission shaft), now my PTO won't work. After first starting it up, it spun intermittingly, then after moving the PTO lever back and forth to engage/disengage it, it starting spinning fine. Trying it later, it wouldn't spin at all. Sounds like something inside the PTO shaft area or the tranny case is not connecting when the lever is engaged.

Any ideas where I need to look first?

You might try adjusting the Lever guide to allow a little more travel when engaging the PTO. I had to adjust mine one time and so far it's continued to engage every time. Just a thought, good luck, Papa.

Remove the oil filler plug. Flashlight. See if part #15 is engaged in part # 14. Operate the lever to see what's going on.

Did you replace the transmission main shaft seal? If so perhaps the retainer has been installed up side down.

But first. Go ahead and remove the differential back plate/pto assembly. Easy task. Check part # 14,15 for wear and damaged teeth - common wear/damage areas. The only hard task is making sure you don't drop part #15 in the differential when replacing it.

I'm wondering if the post on part #15 in the diagram above isn't worn with a flat spot on it. This is caused most often by the PTO clutch pushing back away from the main shaft for a long time... the groove on the PTO clutch starts grinding down the pin on the shifter (#15) and that allows the clutch to slide too far back on the PTO shaft...making the PTO stop spinning. The other problem is just as Eugene says above. If the seal retainer is installed backwards, the main shaft can slip forward and will cause lack of engagement of the PTO clutch and the splines on the back of the main shaft. This can cause significant wear on both the splines and the PTO clutch and make part #15 wear again quickly if not corrected completely...

Around 30 years ago I bought a 48 (still own it), on which the pto had never been used, but when I tried it the pto would not stay engaged. There was an older gentleman in the area who owned a small place selling used equipment, but was a retired IH dealer. He told me there was a problem in the earlier models that the pto did not fully engage and the field fix was to elongate the mounting holes a little in the quadrant (item 17) to allow it to move further. Worked great for me.
