Farmall Cub

I am wondering why some want to use the Hitachi and not the Delco [ the delco was standard on the late 75 -79 longstripe cubs ]
It fit as it should , cost is $50 or so so that is not a factor. and it looks American

I have only used the Delco one wire alternator ($45.00 here) and never had any issues with any of them. I have had no reason to try or change to the Hitachi so I have had no experience with them.

I think it is a lot like asking which brand of motor oil is best for the Cub. Outside of a few basic parameters, like will it fit under the hood, the rest boils down to personal preference. Apparently both are reliable choices.

GM for me. I have 5 on my tractors and have installed at least that many on other tractors. Zero problems.........ever.

I'm sure at some point I will need to buy one of these alternators. What's the number for the Delco? I have recently started saving info like this. Fixes you don't find in the manuals. That way I don't have to search for it here on the forum. Thanks

I just ask for a Delco 10 SI. My Napa parts counter guy knows exactly what to bring me. Most of the "other" parts stores need an automotive reference, otherwise you'll end up with a can of Shinola. Usually you can just tell them a GM car or truck model from the late '70's.

You can see the Delco hiding under the hood.. I did have to "re-clock" the back half so the wire clips were on top of the alternator instead of the hood side. Somebody may have the model number that doesn't require the wire position being moved, but it's not hard to do. Plenty of how to's on the internet for that.

I used the Hitachi 14255 for a few reasons:
It has a split pulley that can be easily changed to fit a 1/2" belt, it comes setup for a 3/8" belt, not sure about the Delco.
It comes with the connector for the S, L connections, not sure about the Delco.
It has two mounting ears much like a generator, I thought it'd be easier to adapt to the existing bracket. The Delco has one.
It has a smaller amp rating, I'll never need the 63A rating of the Delco. The Hitachi 14255 is rated at 50A and the 14231 at 35A. The higher the rating, the bigger physically. The 6v generators used on Farmalls were rated at 15-20A.
The Hitachi has a lower core charge, since I didn't have a core, this seemed like a more economical way to go. (at O'Rielly's)
Both are re-manufactured, most likely not in USA, may depend on where you buy your alternator.
I know either one will do the job, just my opinion.

the Napa # is 2134011SW.

New here. I have a Cub Lowboy with a 6 volt positive ground that doesn't charge. So I can switch over to a altenator that's I assume a 12 volt? What else has to be changed?

Light bulbs and coil or use resistor.

Also maybe a bracket, maybe the belt and battery. If your fan has the large pulley you can use your generator belt. If not you will have to have a new belt.

If your tractor does not have lights, I would go ahead and get a new coil with an internal resisitor.

Should be able to make it a 12 volt for around $150

Something real "gear headed" about having a Corvette Alternator on a Farmall Cub ...I have 3 ( Counting the Vette) and 2 Cubs....That'd be my reason, Boss.....Dave

Always use what you're most comfortable with. I'm sure the hitachi is good and affordable. I've used the generator base bracket with a piece of all-thread on a Delco before. No problem there. I just opted for something homemade on my latest conversion. Clint Carter made the upper bracket which looks factory and very functional. Don't know if he still has any or not.
I paid $49.00 for the Alternator...maybe less than 20 for the coil....about the same for the belt. Like Tim said...should about $150 for the change over. As far as reliability, I got nearly 300k out of my last GM truck and never a blip out of the alternator.....traded in with the original still charging away.
