1950 Cub hydraulics stopped working

Postby marshall » Sat Sep 28, 2013 1:17 pm

Hi:

I got past my seized fan hub which was last weekend's project. So I was doing a little cutting with the sickle bar and it started to rattle and vibrate violently.
I couldn't see what was wrong so I shut off the PTO and headed for home. Turns out the bolt on the left side of the tractor that holds the sickle bar assembly on had loosened
and so the whole assembly was shaking. So I tightened pulled it back in position and tightened the bolt and it now runs without all the horrible shaking. But when I use the lever to raise and lower the sickle bar
there is no response. I don't hear any sounds that would indicate something is trying to happen either.

Watching the lever moving and looking at the mechanism for raising and lowering, I can't really see how this is supposed to be working. Just a chain hanging down from the arm on the lifting shaft to the sickle bar.
So the arm isn't moving nor does it seem like its trying to. What goes on inside that lifting shaft I can't see too well but there isn't much to see.
:help:
Any ideas on what could be wrong? I can post images of this section of the tractor if that would help anyone.

Marshall:

As Mike said, did you check the level of the Hy-Tran or Hydraulic Fluid. Sounds like you are out and there may be air in the system preventing the unit from generating pressure. Open up the fill port .. the big nut there that Mike pointed to ..

Image

You can see it on the side of the reservoir. Fill the reservoir until it reaches the bottom of the port. Reinsert the plug but do not tighten completely. Start the tractor, wait a couple minutes, then cycle the TC a number of times until it lifts and lowers smoothly. Then tighten the fill port plug. You will have now bled the Hydraulic system :D

Ditto to what Mike said. It's basically only an internal double action hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic pump, and a control mechanism. No oil = no go. If you have no obvious external leaks then it's probably leaking hydraulic oil into the engine via the seal on the pump. If your tractor seems to be over full when you check the engine oil then that's a strong indication your pump seal is leaking. http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Cub%20 ... index.html
This is a link to the Cub Owners manuals which will tell you how to fill it and a bit about how it works. Good luck.

So I'm not sure where I get this Hy Tran fluid. I've looked at discussion forums asking about alternatives but never found anything conclusive about the product that replaces Hy Tran fluid. I'm not seeing any dealers that sell Hy Tran so
I must need some other product. Can someone point me to an acceptable fluid for this application and perhaps a dealer online who sells it? Thanks very much!!

If that does not fix it, the gear may have come off the front of the pump. Don't ask how I know this, lol!

Marshall:

If you have a CaseIH dealer they can supply it. IF you don't then if you have a New Holland, Massey-Ferguson, Kubota dealership around they can probably supply an alternative. Even Wally world has a usable product. What you need to make sure is that whatever Hydraulic Fluid you use is that it meets MS1209 specifications or exceeds it. MF-Perma-Tran fits the bill, NH Umbra fits the bill that I know of for sure as I have looked at them Currently I am using Perma-Tran in my Cub because the splitter moves between my Cub and my brother-in-law's M-F 1040 (tomorrow morning at some point actually)

It does say in the reviews:

Recommended for the following applications: Case HY-TRAN Ultra (MS-1209)

Before buying it I would check to make sure. The description also says that:

Traveller® Premium Universal Tractor Trans/Hydraulic Fluid is a specially formulated, premium multigrade (SAE 10W-20) fluid blended with the highest quality lubricating oils and the most technological advanced additive system. Provides superior protection and performance for modern farm equipment employing a common sump to lubricate hydrostatic transmissions, differentials, wet brakes, hydraulics and final drive gears

Ended up getting Car Quest Tractor hydraulic fluid at my local Kubota dealer.
Filled her up, bled her out, and up came the sickle bar. Now I guess I need to watch the levels of oil and see if they rise to determine if I have a leak from the hydraulics into my oil right?

Thanks guys!
