Farmall Cub

So, have the cub a ways from home, so don't get much time to start it. After it starts the first time(from cold) it starts with barely turning over. It is the first time that it seems to struggle. I was told to put the throttle at lowest setting, and just bump the choke. So I try this, and it fires and stops. Then fires and stops a couple more times, then it seems as though the fuel is gone. So try again and give it a bump on the choke, and it fires and stops. Takes a few times to get it going. Maybe more gas on the first try? Where do you set yours when you start from cold? Like I said, after it starts once, it purrs like a kitten, runs perfect, and restarts fine. 48' cub.

Using the starting procedure spelled out in the operator's manual may prove more reliable for you.

to what Don said. That is exactly how I start my Cubs.

I follow those procedures except for the choke. I do not pull out the choke initially. I start with the choke open, then if she does not pop in the first revolution, I pull the choke lever out until she pops. Until the temperature drops below 40, she doesn't need choke at all.

"operator's manual" say's: depress clutch to start. I have read many times that starter cranks faster and starts better without engaging clutch. ??

That is true. But, I'm sure depressing the clutch pedal was added as an additional safety procedure.

Depends I guess if you are sitting on the Cub or standing beside it. First off, I never start my Cub when sitting on the tractor unless it had stalled doing a job which isn't very often. I always start my Cub standing next to the carb. That's just me.

Not sure about the later models .. the ones with the safety switch .. but for most of them previous to that ... no need to touch the clutch at all. Just shake hands with the gear shift and make sure that it is in neutral!

Either way is OK. Just remember to make sure the transmission is in neutral. Each and every time.

I start them while not on the tractor, however this is not a good practice , my dad would have smacked the tar out of me for cranking it while not in the seat. Sooner or later you will start it in gear if you crank it off the tractor, JMO

I've started one from the ground with it in gear. I can promise you that was no fun at all. Mine starts the moment starter is engaged. Rear tire hit my leg before I knew what was going on. Scared the **** out of me. Luckily no damage. I reached from behind the tractor and pulled shifter to neutral. So yes, not starting from the ground is a good idea I'd say

Same here also. Amazing how fast you can get a tractor off a trailer when it's started in gear Luckily the only thing damaged was my shorts
