weak starter

Postby kinelbor » Fri Jun 03, 2005 8:07 pm

I just got a new battery for my 48' cub. The starter will turn the engine a small amount and then wont turn anymore. The battery is good. What should I try to get it to crank over well?

First, clean the connections at both ends of both cables. If your cables have those clamp-on replacement ends get some good cable ends and crimp and solder them on. Make sure the ground cable has good tight shiney connections. It also common to find the ground cable has been replaced with a lighter 12 volt cable. If this is the case, get a good heavy 6 volt cable to replace it. If that doesn't help (and I'm sure it will) get your starter checked out.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Sounds good. I was trying the starter with just jumper cables from batt to starter and frame. Maybe the contact area was to small. There were some sparks from the connection. I will try it with the connections tommorow. Thanks.

:( Mine acted the same way then finally wouldn't turn over at all. Wound up having it rebuilt, about $45.00, and now it works fine.
Always try the easiest thing first.
