While working on my Rex 48 distributor on the bench - I wondered why not just remove the two screws that hold the point mounting bracket, pop it out, install the points and condenser - then put the plate back in and set the points.

I use just a dab of grease in the screw slot so it sticks on the end of the screw driver. Use the same to get the valve spring keepers to stay in place when letting the spring down.

I saw that you can now purchase the Pertronix for a 6 volt system. I was surprised that they sold them like that. I have to say that the points and condenser are easy enough to change out and I can change out a lot of them for the cost of the Pertronix kit, but then you never have to mess with points again. The next tune up, I am going to put on the new pertronix electronic ignition.

Why not remove the 2 bolts that hold the distributor in place, and not have to get the little screws lined up, where you can't see, and still have to gap the points? I keep a spare distributor ready, with new points and condenser, points gapped, and its easier than changing a spark plug, with the hood on. Ed

....I usually have the hood and tank off when I fiddle with mine, but the last time my distributor was stuck and I took the two bolts that prevent it from turning, off.....You know the one next to the engine block for timing purposes....I won't do that right away again....Good thing little fingered wife with long fingernails was close by....I went to the garden to compose my thoughts and she started the bolt....I,m doubting that those are the bolts you're refering to....I assume your speaking of the bolts farther back....If not tell me your secret besides my hands are to big.... My verdict is in. I set about again - this time with the planter and fertilizer drive mechanism off. I still could not get the screw in the condenser hole. The conclusion is in - I pulled the distributor and in 5 minutes, I placed it on a clean red rag, easily change the points and condenser, put it back in, set the gap. Total time 15 minutes.

I spent more time trying to be creative in doing it with it on - than it took to take it off and do it easily.

That works doesn't it You might be only halfway through but I is at the end and looking at the next group of numbers. Stuff don't work near as well as it did a couple years ago I am convinced that since I now own a Cub with a distributor - definitely pull it and work on it on the bench. I am all about ease and lack of stress

I use a combination of a short screw driver and have found a certain way to hold my mouth that makes for an easier job.

You probably have a stubby, but will have to do a lot of research to discover a good mouth position. It is different for everyone.

If you take the distributor out, your mouth can be sucking on a coffee, while you easily install the screws! Ed
