Cub Prices?

Hello from West Central Illinois,
I am an automotive technician that enjoys tractor shows and collecting toy tractors to get away from the daily grind. I have an opportunity to purchase a 1948 Farmall Cub from my father and would like any input on private party Cub prices in your area for what I am looking at. I do not have the serial number yet, but believe it is a 1948 model. It has older tires and the front tires are rough, the engine was overhauled in 1988, it has about 400 hours. It was repainted in 1991, but has sustained damage from normal use. No hydraulics, lights and electrical are fair, battery box is complete. Implements include the IH Danco belly-mower, sickle mower, belt pulley, cultivators, moldboard plow, home built IH planter (1 row). Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The tractor really depends on condition, both physically and mechanically. Can you post a pic of what you are looking at, both the tractor and the implements? It'll really help with determining a price.

Here goes, without seeing pics, $1000 for tractor and cultivators would be $1250 with hydraulics, plus the rest of the equipment another $500 or so

Since it is Dad's tractor and equipment, I'd shoot for $1500- to $2000-. I only provided the prices because it is Dad's tractor. It if were someone else's, I would probably provide a lower estimate.

What is Dad asking for the tractor?

I own my grandfather's tractor. I have a lot more money in the tractor than it would sell for. But then I drove the tractor as a kid.

The value of a Cub is usually dependant on a few variables such as:

1. Location
2. Condition
3. Accessories/Implements/Extras
4. Availability
5. Desirability
6. Price you are willing to pay
7. Price a buyer is willing to accept

All are important to some degree depending on what part of the country you live in. The region you are in plays a large part in determining value especially in regards to Availability (are they common in your area?) and Desirability (are they highly sought after either by those wanting to work them or show them?).

Condition is important, Paint is not all that critical but condition of the tin-work, rubber and of course the power-train are critical in a large amount of cases. If the Cub does not run and you cannot start it, then it becomes priced as a parts Cub. If it doesn't have Touch Control/aka hydraulics then it is usually not worth as much as one with hydraulics. Are the tires loaded? Is that a plus or a minus .. that will either devalue or value the Cub appropriately. If the Cub runs then it is worth more.

Parts Cub - $100.00 to $600.00 max
Running Cub - $700.00 to $1,500.00 max

Implements - what comes with it? Again the above variables also enter into it as well as are the fast-hitch or non fast-hitch implements.

In any case without pictures it is hard to virtually impossible to value a Cub properly. Pictures make for a better shot at it but up close and personal is what really should be the determining factor.

In your case give what you stated so far .. you are going to need tires - that is about $400.00 or more right there. Usually $100.00 for 3 Rib Fronts with Tubes say from Tucker Tire or $140.00 for Two 4.00-12 4.00x12 400x12 Farmall Cub, Original Front Tractor Tires & Tubesand about $300.00 from Miller Tire for say 8.3x24's. Depends on what you want and how close to factory you desire.

Lights and electrical are fair .. so no difference really. Same with paint job .. immaterial especially since it is already a 20 year old paint job. Engine job in '88 doesn't affect the price either. It is immaterial. Big question is how does it run? Does it smoke, burn oil, knock or anything else? So far from what I understand it runs .. doesn't have TC and needs tires all around. Well the Cub could be worth as David said $1,000.00 by itself. But then you have to figure in the tires, a TC unit and whatever other minor issues there are. That could chop $500.00 off of the price easily .. lets be fair and say $300.00 for the tires and $200.00 for the TC Pump, pipes and Reservoir.

The implements .. if in good shape they can be worth from $150.00 to $300.00 each .. but usually in a package deal probably around for what is there should be about $500.00 to $650.00 ... so that brings the Cub back up to $1,000.00. The home built IH Planter -- depending on what it is originally .. would set it's price. But as it is homebuilt I wouldn't even figure it into the price.

So... there is an about right idea. As we said, pics sure would help. This applies to most Cubs. Since as you said this is your Dad's tractor .. well you better ask him what he wants and work from there.
