Farmall Cub

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum and new to the Farmall Cub. I just got a 1954 Cub, and after taking it on a test drive I realized I am probably looking at a lot of work ahead of me. I am a hobbyist and tinkerer when it comes to tractors so I do not have a lot of mechanical experience. Anyway, one of the first things that needs fixed on the tractor is the exhaust. I was wondering if someone sold a Cub horizontal all in one pipe and muffler that attach to the manifold like a Ford 8N.

I would also like to ask one other question. When I first got the Cub I would use the choke to start it and take the choke off and it ran like it should. When I went on my test drive, I put in more gas, first time I had ever filled the tank, and now the only way I can keep it running is to keep the choke on. I am assuming that I stirred some stuff in the gas tank and I have clogged something up. Does that sound logical?

Sounds like you have a dirty/clogged main jet in the carburetor. First, shut off the fuel at the sediment bowl. Then clean the bowl out very well. Next, unscrew the main jet while the fuel is off (the screw toward the bottom staring you in the face while looking dead at the carb.). Take a peice of SOFT copper wire (stranded electrical wire works well) and clean the tiny holes. It would help if you had some spray carburetor cleaner and some air pressure too. Replace the jet and turn fuel back on and start it up. That should solve your problem, however if the tank is dirty; it would be best to remove the hood/tank and clean it out well....if not, you're going to be cleaning the carburetor more often. Also, if cleaning the jet doesn't fix it, I would dissemble carb. and clean it thoroughly and install a new kit if necessary. These are very simple tractors to maintain and work on.

The exhaust question.....yes, IH did produce a Farmall Cub with the "underslung" exhaust. I think those came out in the mid-to-late 50's and the change lasted until the end of production in 1979......the other guys on here can actually verify when the change was. Any Cub can be "retro-fitted" to have that exhaust if you desire.

TM Tractor Parts (a site sponsor) sells the horizontal pipe and muffler. However you will need to remove the vertical pipe and install an elbow. Not always an easy task since the threads in the manifold are usually toast.

Here are some pictures of a 1975 I am finishing up on.....it has the "underslung" exhaust system. A picture of a 1949 Cub is also attached. It was retro-fitted (before I got it) with an underslung exhaust, hood, and grille.....all from a 1957 tractor I believe. You wouldn't have to change out the hood for it to work...unless you didn't want an extra hole.

The advise you all have given and shown me is great. As for the elbow on the manifold, it is already there. I already have kind of a horizontal exhaust now. What some one did was come out of the elbow on the manifold put a curve in the pipe to clear the implement lift bar/bracket and then ran a straight pipe past the driver sloping downward ending just past the fender. When I was on my test drive, I noticed the straight pipe was rusting through.

I guess to clarify, do they sell the exhaust pipe and muffler together, with the bends in the exhaust pipe in the right places, ready to be mounted. It seems when I search the internet all I ever can find is the muffler or vertical straight pipe. I have yet to see the exhaust pipe with the bends in it that go to the muffler. I was hoping I would not have to have someone bend the exhaust pipe for me.

As far as the fuel delivery goes, also look down in the tank with a flashlight (do not use a match) and look for any debris that might be drawn into the inlet to the fuel strainer in addition to the other things the guys have pointed out. I've had that happen before.

Not as one piece, you will need to buy them separately at TM as Rick and I pointed out. Case IH should also have them.

I would like to see some pictures of that modification. It is always fun and neat to see what some previous owners did to modify their tractors (usually on a budget, or to their taste, or both).

I thought I had looked at tmtractor before. I guess I over looked the exhaust pipe. With the pipe and muffler the way it is it seems like a pretty simple install. I looked at how the muffler would mount and it looks like the bracket that the muffler mounts to is there. All I need would be the muffler clamp.

In addition to the muffler and pipe, you need a hangar bracket and U bolt. TM has the U bolt: but you'll have to find the bracket elsewhere (possibly used).

Welcome to the forum - like Ricky says this is by far the best site on the net. You can learn everything and then some about your Cub. Curious why you want to change to horizontal exhaust. I'd like to change my 55 to vertical so I don't have to smell it when I'm working behind or when stopped idling.
