Would moving the timing 1/2 way between the 2 marks (Advancing ??????)at 400 Rpm cause the tractor to overheat or do I have another problem.....It runs great but overheated while mowing.....Ouch....Keep a bottle of Aloe on hand... .....Dave

Have you flushed the crud and scale out of the engine block and lower radiator housing?

Radiator fins clean?

Incorrect ignition timing will help cause engine over heating.

Yep just had it apart and cleaned the system and radiator yesterday.....Thats why I wondered about the timing....I timed it as stated, thats where I got rid of the miss I had after the new coil and tune up.....I did put a bottle of water wetter in it and finished mowing...Dave

Dave, are you sure it was overheating or just pushing excess water out the overflow after normal expansion?

Well Denny, thats what I thought at first but I had a spray coming from somewhere and the fan was pushing it out...When I stopped to investigate I took the cap off without thinking, and I do know better , and managed to give myself an anti-freeze shower (nothing to serious, the sting went away in a couple of hours using aloe ...It was burbling pretty good...Lots of pressure.... .Anyhow its an after market radiator I put on "before forum" and now that someone posted a way to test the radiator for leaks, I'm going to fix the old one....The aftermarket one doesn't have the # of fins and tubes the old one had and I've had to use water wetter with it since the get go....But I put a bottle of water wetter in and mowed for a couple of more hours and kept track of it....I did some work on it earlier and seem to remember from my Boces days in 63/64 some thing about timing affecting temperature....Thats why the post...Thanks for the reply...Dave

Yes , too much timing can make an engine run hotter. It will also seam hot if there is too much water. and with a pressure cap it will have pressure. Remember no water pump, it has to have room for the water to expand.

Hey Boss hows it going, I think you might have ker bonked it right on the head....I did a bunch of work on the tractor and filled the radiator, probably to full...And as you described a series of events all came together just right and caused the problem....Denny mentioned that also....I'll be using the tractor quite a bit today and will see what happens...When you get rushing and in a hurry sometime things get monkeyed up...(Where have I heard that before )....Thanks for the reply.....Dave
