The problem with those plugs is your Cub could run cold today, but hot tamale.

I'm on the bandwagon w/D-21's

The key to this is having the right heat range plug. If they're too cold today, no matter the brand, it won't run so hot tamale.

I've had good luck with Autolite 3116's.

If I remember right when I looked up the application in a Champion catalog it calls for D-16's, which for me was too cold and didn't run well at all after a short while. The Autolite lookup calls for 3116's, which may cross to a D-16 but they have worked far better than the D-16's, five years so far.

And in this case with BR's tractor, anything would have been better than what we started with!!

I am running Champion D-21's in Merlin and have not had a problem for a year. Prior to that, I ran Autolite 386's in it because that is what Advance Auto had in stock. Those didn't run for long and fouled. I also tried NGK plugs in the cub and had problems with them as well, but that may be me. Merlin burns a little bit of oil, so that may be the major cause of the fouling on my plugs, but nevertheless, the D-21's seem to handle that well. The tractor starts and runs well with them, so I'll keep them until such time as I have to change them!

I agree with everybody here that it is whatever makes your tractor run the best and longest!

Wow, I don't know if I learned as much about plugs as I was hoping but I did learn about the sense of humor that exists on this forum. I think I'm going to copy this thread & bring it up any time I'm feeling a bit down. for the laugh, I needed it today.

Joe, you should have been at our little mini-fest at Billy Ray's last Friday. Raymond, Tim Ezell, Billy Ray & me. I hadn't laughed that much in weeks.

I was not going to tell this but since Boss brought up how.......well..cheap BR is, I think I will go ahead and tell the forum.

Back about a month or so ago we had a "mini fest" at Mr. Roy's and we tuned up Mr. Roy's mowing cub. I personally took out what Roy and I agreed was a pretty rough set of 386's and installed a new set of D21's. BR chimed in and said "they ain't nothing wrong with them*&^@%# plugs Bucket Head, throw in the back of my truck" and I did.

Move foward 1 or 2 months.

It has probably rained 20 inches since then and Billy Ray leaves his truck outside and he lives not too far from the salty Gulf of Mexico so ya'll can sorta picture what those plugs would probably look like as of last Friday........Yep I put in Billy Rays tractor.

When we pulled out the old ones, they looked terrible. They looked like they had been spot welded in. Old BR said well I don't have another set and I asked what he did with Roy's old plugs and the light went off in his head and he snapped his fingers, preceeded to the truck and back he came with them rusty old 386's. I put em in and the thing ran like a top.

Boy did we have a good time that day!!!
