C-2 Parts

I am new to this so pardon my fumbling. I have a belly mower on my 1973 cub and I believe I have a C-2 mower. I am having slipping problems while mowing and it does not have to be tall grass. I took the pully off and underneath there are four spring loaded nipples that go into slots on the mower assembly. I think my problem is the springs. They all appear to be broken and do now apply enough pressure to enguage the mower blades. I cannot locate any pictures not can I locate any parts. I have been on the Woods website but I have had no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to the C-2 manual: http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Cub%20 ... 0Mower.htm It was made by IH/ Danco, not Woods. The easiest way to tell the difference if your deck has the octagon shape is that on the C-2 the angle iron rails that run from the deck to the mounting brackets in the back are straight. On the Woods, they angle outward. Messick's (IH dealer) shows the part # as 474032 R1, and available at $5.11 each. http://www.messicks.com/CAS/59229.aspx You might take a broken spring to a hardware store and see if you can match it.

Edit: You'll need to click on "platform and spindle" to get there.

Yep, definitely a C-2 mower. My preference (by far) is to buy from Carter and Gruenwald http://www.cngcoinc.com/ It's a good, stout mower.

The pins are what 'drive' the mower spindle and when you push in the clutch they ride the slopes on the other piece. Makes a good racket, but doesn't scare the deer. So if enough of the pins are not 'extended' to drive the spindle (broken springs) you will have a problem. They are a very often neglected maintenance item (a bit of grease).

Looks like this with the sheave (pulley off):

If you need to place an order, it would be worthwhile take a good look at the blades, new blades make a world of difference. Also they are reversible if one side is beat up. You do want them to be approximately equal in weight etc for balance.

Yep, that's it. I will order the springs immediately as I am down until they arrive. Thanks for all your help. A picture is worth a thousand words.

G'day to you and welcome. You got good advice.

Larry is one of our resident experts on the C-2 and when it comes time to put mine together I am hoping to talk him into coming for another visit

There are a lot of resources available to our members so suggest that you might wish to spend a little time reading the material via the links below:

Image to Farmallcub.com :big smile: Forum Family. And you have come to the right place for all things Cub related. If you click on the Site Rules, Regulations, & Important Information, it will point you to  the Welcome Wagon wherein you will find links to many useful sites and topics. One of the most important resources are Owner's Manuals, Parts Catalogs and Service Manuals. The Cub Manual Server is the home of the jpg versions and the /index.php]PDF Manuals -- well the pdf's of course  Enjoy!.

Don't give me too much credit Rudi. I can't get the fast hitch one to work right, then again I haven't tried too hard. I felt bad for Rufus just sitting while I run the one with a flail mower, so I did some mowing with it a while back. Then it started throwing the belt. Hopefully the new belt I just got will cure it.

As with anything that spins or turns, good bearings and alignment are key.

Larry:

You will get it figured out, we have faith in you :!: You are right though, as with all mowers .. alignment and bearings are key ingredients.

Actually Rudi the answer may be in the thread about PTO shafts. I never paid attention to the alignment of the U-joints. It's a splined shaft, so it will allow a user to get it wrong. The Mott's have a way to idiot proof it, shaft isn't square so it only goes together the right way. It can sit right where it is until I have time to test that theory, it's a heavy and ungainly beast. Even has new blades!
