For the guys that use a swivel wheel trailer jack mounted to the tractor for a splitting stand, how heavy duty is the jack? Will a 500 pound capacity be sufficient, or does it need to be heavier duty? Thanks.

They are on sale regularly for $20.

I used the same one as Dave, but I removed the "swing" portion so the jack mounts directly to the steel plate that attaches to the implement holes.

Yep, same here. We didn't remove the swivel part, but Raymond welded it in place.

Same here, I weld the swivel. It tends to bend outward, at the swivel if you don't weld it. Ed

Thanks. My next question is 1 stable enough, or is it necessary to have one on each side of the tractor?

One is stable enough as long as you wedge the front end of the tractor for the front split. Rear end stand is very stable with this since the large tires are still on the ground and not far away from the stand!

Dave passed a link to me that had the plans for the stands you're looking for. Not sure how to post it in this reply but if you can't find it on the "How To" you might be able to find Dave's thread that he posted the pics on. I will mess around and see if I can get them on this board. I didn't weld the swivel but I did bolt the swivel to the mount to keep it from moving (it does double duty as my boat trailer jack). If you find the plans I believe it calls for 1/2 plate for one stand and 3/8 for the other. I just used 1/2 for both since it was cheaper just to have it cut from one piece. Also, if you want to spend a few extra dollars, it would be a good idea to make two stands for the front if you're going to move it much. The front half tends to lean a little to the left when just bolted to the starter mount. The back half is pretty solid. Hope this helps.

If you plan on splitting your tractor often for repairs, you can leave the jack stowed in the horizontal position as shown in the 3rd photo.

I like Dave's set of pictures. Dave, are there any modifications you'd recommend since the photos?

Oh, and if the jack is left mounted it could be used for a spare front tire in case of flat!
