Farmall Cub

I inherited a 47 farmall cub, left to me by my father who passed away years ago, it's been sitting for awhile, I noticed it has a mag and the coil is inside of it, which has been soaked in oil, does anyone know how it would get soaked with oil, and how to prevent this from happening again, I believe there must be a seal leaking?, and I saw on this forum that someone mentioned getting a coil at napa would that person know what number it is? thanks for any help this is a great forum that I just recently came upon

G'day to you So you are going to try to get your Father's Cub up and running? That would be great I think. There is a lot to say for a Cub with a strong family connection.

First to answer your questions:



As you can see from the diagram above, there is a gasket between the cover and the body of the mag. If that gasket is dry and cracked there could be leakage there - usually moisture though. Same if the cap had a crack in it. You will need to dry it out and then get a new gasket or make one.

I am unsure if you mean that the coil is soaked with oil or it appears that it has been soaked with oil and has a black wrapping on it? You can get replacement coils - on - Farmall Cub Magneto Coils. You must keep the steel core that is in your magneto as replacement cores are simply not available.

Most folks who get coils at NAPA are getting external and not internal coils.

If there was oil in the front of the magneto when you removed it, you need item 19 in this diagram. Note, it instals from the magneto side. if no oil there, someone may have been over oiling the magneto.



It is the circle you can see around the drive in this picture.

thanks rudi and john, the reason I noticed the oil is because I had no spark, and found the coil soaked in oil, i'll check those gaskets thanks for you help conrad

Aren't coils oil-filled? Never had one apart or leak on me but was thinking I heard or read that.

Denny, He's talking about a mag coil I think.

That's what I heard/read too, Denny. Shouldn't make a difference whether it is a mag or battery coil, they should both work the same even if they are different shape.

That was my thought. My original point was maybe the coil was leaking and was the source of the oil.

I guess I just can't visualize a mag coil having oil in it. Guess I'll have to find a worthless one to open up.

I don't believe the magneto coil is oil filled.

I have torn them apart, a magneto coil is not oil filled. They are just wires and insulation around a core.

I suspect the oil was from someone "over-oiling" the mag, as John suggested. I have seen small amounts of oil in the impulse area due to a leaking seal, but a coil with oil on it usually comes from a well-intentioned but mis-informed owner squirting too much oil in the oil fill cap. It only takes a couple drops per year to keep them oiled.

thanks for the info gang, you'all are probably right from oiling I noticed an oil cap, when I get a new coil I'll pay attention to that, thanks again gang
